DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

i tend to be an in the moment person, someone who thinks about what’s going on today and can sometimes forget to look back at the past and the things and people before me that helped shape me into who i am today. that’s one of the reasons that i love celebrating Dia De Los Muertos. originally celebrated in mexico this occasion is acknowledged throughout the americas today and offers us the opportunity to celebrate the lives of those we love who have gone before us.

we planned this celebration with Veuve Clicquot who believes that in order to toast to the future we must first honor our past. it turned out to be such a special and colorful day. we sourced all of our props from Olvera street here in los angeles, if you’ve never been it’s a Mexican market place that is considered the birthplace of los angeles.

pumpkin lanterns DIY | designlovefest

it’s finally starting to feel cool around here and we are here to talk a little bit about halloween decor! we’ve been super into ceramics lately and have noticed a lot of handmade ceramic light fixtures that got us thinking about how to tie that back into decorating with pumpkins this season.

there is also such a variety of types of pumpkins that are available to us now, that we figured this would be a perfect place to showcase them. we got ours at whole foods, but keep your eye open for those unique pumpkins when you take your trip to the pumpkin patch!

how to make them:
• start by cutting the bottom out of your pumpkin so that it rests flat
• pull out the strands and seeds and with your metal spoons scrape out as much as possible from the inside of your pumpkin

pumpkin lanterns DIY | designlovefest

• mark your pattern on your pumpkin with small bits of tape
• drill holes in your pumpkin using your desired drill bit for the size holes you would like

• after you finish drilling, wash your pumpkin off and if necessary scrape out the inside walls one more time
• use a pipe cleaner (or two) to remove any bits that remain in your drilled holes after washing

we hope you make these cute pumpkin lanterns, we love how they came out. remember, shelf life for any pumpkin is about a week, so if you want yours to last through the holiday, time your carving accordingly!

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Follow the mixing directions on your chocolate cake mix. We used a cupcake tin that makes 6 large cupcakes. Using cupcake paper liners, drop the cake mix about three quarters of the way. Place in the oven and bake for 18-21 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out smooth when poking the cupcakes.

• We like having our frosting homemade and love this recipe found here.

• Here comes the fun part! To start layering your cupcakes. Fill a pastry bag with chocolate frosting and and give a generous layer of frosting to each cupcake. Using a spoon drop a scoop of marshmallow fluff right on top (mini marshmallows are another great option as they can stack well and stick to the frosting) Using the kitchen torch, lightly brown the marshmallows. Crush one to two graham crackers and garnish the tops of each cupcakes.

SO, WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK AGAIN?

vday07

i’ve been contemplating for a while the topic of sponsored posts and how to explain it more clearly. i get asked quite often by a stranger on a plane or in a taxi, “what do you do?” and if i say “i run a lifestyle blog,” a lot of the times people are confused as to how that could actually be a JOB. especially one that makes enough money to live…
