BENIHANA BOWLS!

Benihana inspired dinner | designlovefest

i personally have never been to Benihana (that i remember?!) but bri has some seriously fond childhood memories there, like when she hosted her 10th birthday party there and had three tables full of friends with her eating fried rice and watching onion volcano towers (lol). she recently became extremely nostalgic for a meal there and since there isn’t one close to us we decided we should try and create a Benihana inspired dinner at home and it was a success. we searched the web for some tried and true recipes that were inspired by the restaurant’s dishes and served up a feast! – joanie

we used three already existing recipes as part of this meal, this recipe for the Benihana ginger sauce (which is bri’s favorite, seriously! she was trying to get me to eat it by the spoonful). the Benihana magic mustard sauce and also this recipe for the fried rice which uses 5 eggs and a whole lotta butter but is worth it!

we served ours with mushroom, zucchini, steak and shrimp and here is how we prepared that part!

what you’ll need// this served around 5-6 people
• 2 lbs steak
• 2 lbs shrimp
• 2 zucchini, washed and sliced lengthwise
• 6 cups mushrooms, washed and dried.
• white rice

• pre-heat oven to 350. start by patting your steak dry and generously coating with salt. heat a cast iron skillet, once hot add a bit of oil, wait a minute and then add the steaks. test that the oil is hot enough by touching the meat down, it should sizzle, if not, wait a bit longer. brown the steaks on each side, and then put the pan into the preheated oven and cook for 5- 7 minutes or until you reach desired temp (i overcooked our steak, so watch it closely)

• once the steaks are done, remove and set aside, covering lightly with foil. using the same pan, keep all the juices in there and put on the stove top. once hot, add the mushrooms and pinch of salt. let the mushrooms get really brown and cooked down.

• for the shrimp, rinse and pat dry. you can either cook these under the broiler or on the stove in a pan. since there are so many flavors going on with this meal you can cook the proteins very simply!

• we cooked the zucchini in our panini press and then sprinkled  it with white sesame seeds. we didn’t use oil on these as there is a lot of fat already in this recipe.

STYLED | AROUND THE HOUSE

around the house | designlovefest

what do you wear around the house? are you a come home and immediately put on sweatpants, do you wear your robe or stay fully dressed until bedtime and then put on your pjs? i was thinking about this the other day because growing up my mom and dad were almost always dressed in their normal clothes. they didn’t pull on comfy clothes while we were hanging at home and mostly my mom was fully dressed at breakfast time, even on school days. interesting to think about as now it feels like we’re in the age of lounge clothes, legging wearing, robed people. i’m definitely a lounge wear person. my husband comments that i’ll stay in my sweatpants until the last possible minute and then frantically throw on clothes and run out the door. i do love getting dressed but i’m a leisure queen at heart. but maybe not more so than bri who has a serious robe collection! anyway, here is an ode to all the loungewear i’d like to own right now…

around the house | designlovefest

actually, one of my favorite things to lounge around the house in is a loose fitting dress. nothing better to throw out of of the shower than a dress and  you can throw a jacket over it and be out of the house in a flash if needed. i love this kaftan from emerson fry and i also live in my LACAUSA dresses, like this and this. especially into black dresses so you can slather lotion all over and not worry about it staining your dress. – joanie

Gap ribbed joggers $32 – loveee anything ribbed, it really adds an extra punch of comfort and this oatmeal color is very chic for loungewear.

seamless ribbed bra $30 – when you have overnight guests but you can’t be bothered to wear a proper bra, seamless to the rescue!

Slip tank $53- i have the full slip version of this tank and it’s the perfect layering piece and i also love it paired with these cotton undies for sleep.

Monrow sweatpants $146 – $100+ price is no joke for a pair of sweats by the price per wear makes it worth it. i like that these are loose through the leg but have a fitted ankle. also, i only really advocate for sweatpants in neutral tones, i don’t think sweats are the time to make a statement in color or print.

Lunya washable silk robe $250 – the reviews on this are convincing enough to drop the $$$. a great thing to put on a birthday list, it’s chic and cozy and sexy all at the same time. a good robe is for life!

Striped classic sweatpants $122- this is as far as i’ll go on having a pattern, but i love the retro feel and the deep blue color of these.

washable silk robe $248 – washable and silk don’t usually go together but apparently Lunya has found the magic with this robe.

lou & grey navy sweatpants $70 – i love a good matching set and i can personally attest that the comfort of lou&grey sweats is really out of this world.

Lunya joggers $118 – i’ve written about these before and i’m doing it again, these sweatpants are worth the $$.

tank dress $140 – this is my go-to summer lounge look, a loose fitting dress in a dark color that is comfortable enough to wear in and out of the house when it’s too hot to wear sweatpants.

Pullover fleece $89 – another retro feeling item, love the half zip and the slightly boxy shape. this comes in lots of fun colors.

Everlane cashmere waffle $150 – not sure how everlane is always making such great basics but they really nail it with their colors and styles. i’m a big fan of a cashmere sweater and i tend to treat mine like an everyday item, wear it to bed, with jeans, over a dress, the sky is the limit!

FEELIN’ IT

ganni | designlovefest

ganni has so many cute pieces for spring right now! i’m always a fan of their colors and patterns, they keep things playful while still being sophisticated. wish i had a birthday coming up because i would be wish listing some of these items asap, how pretty is that pink + yellow combo?! and i love that they paired everything with cowgirl boots!

into eyelet everything, especially in this yellow color. and these blue boots are too cool for me but i love them, and very into the sheer mesh floral turtleneck, would be so cute under overalls or tucked into a full skirt.

ganni | designlovefest

many of these dresses and pieces are super versatile too, you can wear them during the day or night. to a wedding, with a denim jacket, cowgirl boots or heels.

ganni is a pro at the wrap dress and i love this yellow with pink flowers wrap, and this flirty little cocktail dress is a favorite, looks so fun to wear! and again with the eyelet, so sweet in this pale pink.

A RELAXATION KIT!

relaxation | designlovefest

we had the best weekend celebrating bri’s bachelorette at hotel joaquin in laguna beach last weekend. everything went exactly as planned, the weather was gorgeous and it was really just the perfect weekend. the theme for the weekend was relaxation which was exactly what we did! since bri is the queen of chill, i wanted to put together gift bags for everyone that included some of her favorite items so that people could use them over the weekend and take them home to keep them calm in their own lives. – joanie

an essential part of the relaxation kit was the parachute home bathrobe. their waffle robes are so soft and cozy, everyone was wearing theirs all weekend long to breakfast, the beach and lounging by the pool.

relaxation | designlovefest

all the guests also got mumu pajama sets which are perfect thing to hang around the hotel in. they are cut slightly oversized which makes them really comfy. the stripe set is my favorite.

bri is a serious candle lover so of course we had to include that as well! this one from P.F candle co in their night-blooming jasmine scent is amazing! we’ve loved their candles and scents for awhile now (they are LA based!) and their terra collection is beautiful.

relaxation | designlovefest

our obsession for true botanicals runs deep, their pure radiance oil is at the top of my Christmas list every year and i really notice such a difference in my skin when i’m using their products. we include their renew face mist in the gift bags as that’s one of bri’s favorite products to use at home and on the road. it’s great for bringing along to the pool for a midday spritz or to use before heading to bed.

and finally, the KIVA confections espresso bites for when you really wanna chill.

had the best time putting these kits together! these are truly some of bri’s favorite items and i love thinking about people getting to use the items at home to relax and remember the weekend! Xx

STYLED / LOVING NOW

styled | designlovefest

what have you been wearing lately? i’ve been slacking on the style posts on here lately because i haven’t really been inspired by a lot of what i’m seeing and i think i felt a bit burned out on shopping after the holidays and needed to take a little break. i find myself gravitating towards my wardrobe staples and wearing them over and over again. there is something so nice about putting something on and knowing exactly how it’s going to fit and feel. i am excited that i’m seeing so much color coming in for spring. i bought a fuchsia shirt and plan to add more hot pink to my wardrobe in the near future. i’m definitely in the mood to update my denim and have my eyes on these two pairs of AGOLD jeans, the lighter cropped wash and the darker fit as well. they both very well reviewed which always seems to be an indicator to give them a try. – joanie

styled | designlovefest

i’ve been wearing this button up like crazy, i’m always on the hunt for something classic like this that i can tuck into jeans and this one is perfect because it’s lightweight and doesn’t add a lot of bulk once you tuck it in. and of course, never taking off this necklace that is the perfect dainty piece to wear every day.

this might be the spring/summer of the button down for me. i’m loving the fresh yellow stripe on the one above and also so into that fuzzy cardigan from anine bing. i love that they style it fully buttoned with nothing underneath and how cute would it be with a simple dress under it. i’ve seen several people wearing that sweater out in the real world and it’s always chic. those white woven shoes are from zara and are very similar to a pair i’ve been wearing for years. somehow they go with everything and are a great purchase.

styled | designlovefest

i’m drawn to the clean lines and simplicity of the tank top above. it’s the perfect thing to pair with something that you don’t want to detract from, a statement skirt or the perfect pair of wide leg pants. it’s there but just barely. and also really loving her hair cut and single necklace.

also, always into something ribbed, especially in white! that ribbed crop top above has the perfect 90’s feeling (and it also has a nice hang and weight to it which is very important for shorter pieces), a very chic version of a cropped hooded sweatshirt and also verrryyy into this two piece white on white look.

styled | designlovefest

digging this skirt but also really into the blue nail polish and copper orange color combo!
