MY HEALTH CHALLENGE / 04

4

this saturday will mark one month of living a healthier lifestyle for me. obviously i have setbacks and i’ve learned a few things about going 0 to 60. however, i feel like i’m still doing a good job staying motivated and striving to make real life changes.

joanie: bri skipped town on me last week so i was left to my own devices. i’ve gotten back into doing pilates plus which is pilates on steroids. the first class is really awkward because everyone knows the names of the exercises and it’s fast paced and overwhelming but if you stick it out it’s a great workout, and only 45 minutes. i also think there’s nothing better to lift your mood then running, i always leave the house at 7am grumpy and tired but come back feeling like a million bucks. getting out the door is always the hardest part, always.

bri: well, i had a setback that i’m pretty bummed about. after rolling my ankle last year it seems the pain is coming back in my knee and left ankle. i’m guessing it was the running, or not giving my body enough resting time in between workouts. after all, i was working out 0 days and then started doing 6 days a week. i was forced to take a working out break when i went to new orleans for a 4 day work trip, but stuck to doing 150 sit-ups in the room every night with my friend anna. and no, that’s not what i look like when i do sit-ups, i guess something was hysterical. i also made sure to do a lot of stretching when i remembered and walked a ton before my ankle started bothering me.

so after a 4 day rest time on my ankle, i’ve been wondering if i can incorporate working out again? i went to see a physical trainer who look a look at my hips, knees and ankles. turns out, i’m not in the best shape in those areas. i have reeeeally tight hip flexors and need to work on strengthening the muscles around my knees with a professional who knows how to help me do that. i think i am going to dedicate 1-2 days a week to seeing him so i can learn about the best way to workout for my body so i don’t injure myself long term. (it’s crazy how you take advantage of something as simple as walking without discomfort!) he did a lot of pressure and rolling out my muscles and it actually helped a lot. i am going to do some lower impact workouts this week like yoga (i got this this yoga mat) or swimming (has anyone been to any cool pools in LA?!) and hopefully my ankle will feel better soon. i really want to stay on a good track with this health challenge, so i’m staying hopeful! what are your favorite workouts to do if you have had knee or ankle injuries?

MY HEALTH CHALLENGE / 01

shape

well, here i am. 15 pounds over my normal weight after going through a breakup (well, two actually) drinking a little too often with friends to talk about said breakups, and then traveling 6 weeks to europe eating every carb in sight. do i regret the carbs? nope. do i wish my pants fit? yep. so when i got home, i decided to jump on a new healthy track and to document it right here to keep me accountable. joanie, who works on the business side of designlovefest, is amazing at staying in shape. she’s always bringing a healthy lunch to work and talking about her crazy aerial yoga classes. to me, working out has always been very annoying. i’m lazy! i did get in shape about two years ago by going to bar method and felt amazing, but lost steam and got bored. wine was way more fun at the time.

my body has always gone up and down in weight. let me show you. i was pretty thin as a teenager and my first two years of college. i think i used to weigh around 118-120Ibs…

18

then i gained 30 pounds around 22 years old! (making me 148Ibs) this is when i realized my metabolism wasn’t the same and i went on birth control which put on an extra 10 pounds or so…

12

so shocked by the weight gain i decided to cut out almost all carbs and drink way less. by 24 i was the thinnest i had ever been, 112 pounds and i started eating pretty unhealthy honestly…like coffee and salad. i’m not trying to get back to that weight because it was too thin for me. i think at the time i was just so happy to not feel insecure about my body that i took it way overboard. i seriously looked like a bobble head!

MY BEDROOM MAKEOVER

before

after

i’ve been waiting so long to post this! happy to finally get to show you guys the transformation of my bedroom. i brought in victoria from sfgirlbybay to help me on this project, because she is SO GOOD AT IT. really, she’s an interior queen and i knew our aesthetics were in line. i feel like i know how to decide on what i like and don’t like, or style a smaller vignette…but when it comes to putting a whole room together, it just wasn’t happening for me.

we never put much effort into this room when we moved in, we just put a bunch of random things from our old loft in it and let it be. the space just felt so unfinished compared to our living room, and i really wanted to create a relaxing and ADULT bedroom to fit the style of the rest of the house. victoria helped bring the whole vision to life and i could not be more grateful! ps. i know the before shots aren’t perfect, but it actually is pretty accurate of how the room looked most days.

12 HIGHLIGHTS OF MY YEAR

i had a really good time going through a bunch of blog photos on my laptop yesterday. i might have even teared up. while wearing this. i’ve been trying to take a couple extra days off this week (since spending time with family is cool and all, but i wouldn’t necessarily call it relaxing. in my case at least.) here’s a look at some of my favorite moments & posts in 2013…

my trip to stockholm (and italy with two of my best friends). seriously changed my perspective on a lot of things. and started a martini kick.

my living room got a serious makeover here.

i was able to create some beautiful posts with my best friend. this valentine’s day “single gals party” was a favorite. good bonding action and i’m always learning from jen.

i love doing the style shoots. (like this topshop 60’s shoot above) while they are more work than just shooting an outfit out on the sidewalk, they are just so fun. recreating a time period or a vibe and watching it come to life. good times. or that time i went brunette!

the backyard mixology party was so relaxing and came out just how i imagined it. and the video too!

this guy. he’s always a highlight of my year. i don’t go into a lot of details about our relationship (my dude is the private type) but i really love him. like i said earlier today, freelance life for both of us has been hard. we both probably need to sleep more and spend more dinners not talking about work. but there’s nothing better than watching him working on a cool project he loves. i can’t wait for thailand. adventure awaits us. the photo above is from our trip to barcelona in march.

one of my favorite memories for SURE was the designlovefest palm springs trip. we had a girls getaway and made this video. gosh that was the best.

speaking of girlfriend time. my birthday party this year, when natalie made us all birthday crowns, we rented a limo and went on a photo booth tour. how am i gonna top that this year!?

working with benefit cosmetics! reenacting my four dream jobs: the jazz singer, the florist, the detective and the circus performer.

getting a studio for designlovefest. moving out of the space with all my guy friends wasn’t easy but i really love having a place to create, shoot, think, and spread out. (here’s photos from my last office, it was pretty tiny!) and yes, the napping tent gets used from time to time after too much travel. hiring my first full-time employee was also a big milestone for me.

it’s always a highlight to watch all of the blogshops happen. i still get a rush before the students arrive, setting everything up perfect for them.

and this was only a few weeks ago, but it was AWESOME! gift wrapping party with close friends here.

thanks for reminiscing with me! xo bri
