well, here i am. 15 pounds over my normal weight after going through a breakup (well, two actually) drinking a little too often with friends to talk about said breakups, and then traveling 6 weeks to europe eating every carb in sight. do i regret the carbs? nope. do i wish my pants fit? yep. so when i got home, i decided to jump on a new healthy track and to document it right here to keep me accountable. joanie, who works on the business side of designlovefest, is amazing at staying in shape. she’s always bringing a healthy lunch to work and talking about her crazy aerial yoga classes. to me, working out has always been very annoying. i’m lazy! i did get in shape about two years ago by going to bar method and felt amazing, but lost steam and got bored. wine was way more fun at the time.
my body has always gone up and down in weight. let me show you. i was pretty thin as a teenager and my first two years of college. i think i used to weigh around 118-120Ibs…
then i gained 30 pounds around 22 years old! (making me 148Ibs) this is when i realized my metabolism wasn’t the same and i went on birth control which put on an extra 10 pounds or so…
so shocked by the weight gain i decided to cut out almost all carbs and drink way less. by 24 i was the thinnest i had ever been, 112 pounds and i started eating pretty unhealthy honestly…like coffee and salad. i’m not trying to get back to that weight because it was too thin for me. i think at the time i was just so happy to not feel insecure about my body that i took it way overboard. i seriously looked like a bobble head!

i’ve been waiting so long to post this! happy to finally get to show you guys the transformation of my bedroom. i brought in victoria from sfgirlbybay to help me on this project, because she is SO GOOD AT IT. really, she’s an interior queen and i knew our aesthetics were in line. i feel like i know how to decide on what i like and don’t like, or style a smaller vignette…but when it comes to putting a whole room together, it just wasn’t happening for me.
we never put much effort into this room when we moved in, we just put a bunch of random things from our old loft in it and let it be. the space just felt so unfinished compared to our living room, and i really wanted to create a relaxing and ADULT bedroom to fit the style of the rest of the house. victoria helped bring the whole vision to life and i could not be more grateful! ps. i know the before shots aren’t perfect, but it actually is pretty accurate of how the room looked most days.

i had a really good time going through a bunch of blog photos on my laptop yesterday. i might have even teared up. while wearing this. i’ve been trying to take a couple extra days off this week (since spending time with family is cool and all, but i wouldn’t necessarily call it relaxing. in my case at least.) here’s a look at some of my favorite moments & posts in 2013…
my trip to stockholm (and italy with two of my best friends). seriously changed my perspective on a lot of things. and started a martini kick.
my living room got a serious makeover here.
i was able to create some beautiful posts with my best friend. this valentine’s day “single gals party” was a favorite. good bonding action and i’m always learning from jen.
i love doing the style shoots. (like this topshop 60’s shoot above) while they are more work than just shooting an outfit out on the sidewalk, they are just so fun. recreating a time period or a vibe and watching it come to life. good times. or that time i went brunette!
the backyard mixology party was so relaxing and came out just how i imagined it. and the video too!
this guy. he’s always a highlight of my year. i don’t go into a lot of details about our relationship (my dude is the private type) but i really love him. like i said earlier today, freelance life for both of us has been hard. we both probably need to sleep more and spend more dinners not talking about work. but there’s nothing better than watching him working on a cool project he loves. i can’t wait for thailand. adventure awaits us. the photo above is from our trip to barcelona in march.
one of my favorite memories for SURE was the designlovefest palm springs trip. we had a girls getaway and made this video. gosh that was the best.
speaking of girlfriend time. my birthday party this year, when natalie made us all birthday crowns, we rented a limo and went on a photo booth tour. how am i gonna top that this year!?
working with benefit cosmetics! reenacting my four dream jobs: the jazz singer, the florist, the detective and the circus performer.
getting a studio for designlovefest. moving out of the space with all my guy friends wasn’t easy but i really love having a place to create, shoot, think, and spread out. (here’s photos from my last office, it was pretty tiny!) and yes, the napping tent gets used from time to time after too much travel. hiring my first full-time employee was also a big milestone for me.
it’s always a highlight to watch all of the blogshops happen. i still get a rush before the students arrive, setting everything up perfect for them.
and this was only a few weeks ago, but it was AWESOME! gift wrapping party with close friends here.
thanks for reminiscing with me! xo bri
you know how you focus on finishing one room in your house…and it’s awesome when it’s done…but then the other rooms in your house feel kinda sad and not paid attention to? believe me, i’m not in a big rush to start another big design project, but i definitely have started THINKING about the direction i want to take our new bedroom (even though we moved in last summer!) see my whole pinboard here to get the full picture.

i am a strong believer in keeping the bedroom the most calm place in your house (or at least trying to.) we don’t watch tv in there, we try to not work on laptops in bed (although somedays it works out that way.) i like to keep it a stress-free zone as much as possible. i actually have even been working on not having arguments and late night heavy talks in the bedroom…i think it can change the energy in the room. i don’t want to remember it as a place where we fought about money or chores…i just want it to be a place we sleep and relax and dream. i know that sounds pretty hippie, but maybe you can relate.

so keeping with the calm theme, i’d love to have a lot of neutrals going on. white curtains, white bedding, white walls…and i WISH i could turn the floors white. however, it wouldn’t be me if i didn’t add in some hits of color here and there. i’d love to keep the rug a main color focus (and maybe layer a couple together), bring in some bright pillows and small decorative items and that’s it. my living room is color WILD (see here) and i love it…but it’s time to tone it down in the bedroom.
do you keep your bedroom more minimal and neutral? have you notice it helping your stress levels? i’d love to hear about it! -bri
