YEAR-END WITH PAYPAL

year-end review | designlovefest
year-end review | designlovefest

man, this year has been a really challenging in so many ways and at the same time extremely rewarding as well. it’s strange that two polar emotions can exist at the same time but i’m sure all my fellow small business owners know what i mean when i say it definitely happens more often than not. owning a business is definitely about taking it all in stride, the good, the bad and the ugly. PayPal asked if i wanted to collaborate on a year-end campaign around being a small business owner and share a bit of my journey and i gladly accepted. i’ve been doing this for about 9 years now and i still have so much to learn and at the same time feel really proud of how far i’ve come.

PayPal is a website (and an app!) i’ve used since day one, to send out my own invoices, pay subcontractors, manage blogshop student payments, my social media workshop, my affiliate relationships, etc. it was an app that really helped me when i was super short on time and managing a ton of projects and made it really easy to send and receive payments and invoices. it’s an app we still use often, it loads directly into our quickbooks, makes it easy to send international payments (because wire transfers are such a pain) and it’s all around something i believe in and i’m happy to support. the business side of DLF is something we’ve been thinking about a lot more lately, so often i’m focused on the creative and the projects but the contracts, invoicing, taxes, licensing, etc is such a big part of running a business that i want to start sharing more about that aspect.

today i took some time to look back through the years at memories of running my own business. it’s important to take a second to do this for yourself!!

HOTEL TONIGHT

hotel tonight | designlovefest

i recently stayed at the proper hotel in san franscisco, designed by kelly wearstler. i was extremely impressed and inspired by her design choices. i booked the hotel through one of my favorite apps, hotel tonight. i really like using their app and was thrilled when they asked if i wanted to work together as i use them all the time (did you know you can now book up to 100 days in advance!) i love staying at unique, design focused hotels when i travel to get inspiration for either a project i’m working on for the blog or something at home. i’ve been working on finishing up the interior at my house and so i’m always checking things out when i go someplace new. the app is also great for last minute trips, when justin and i were in europe we randomly decided we wanted to go to Amsterdam and i booked the Hoxton (which is a really cool spot!) on the app and we flew there the next day, such a fun spontaneous trip!

i love how there were so many mixed patterns and textures everywhere. i actually felt excited by all of the unexpected details throughout the space. the perfect velvet couches, retro vintage rugs, art deco style furniture, amazing art curation, unique lighting…it was really inspiring! and don’t forget to check out the rooftop bar for even more design ideas. this space has definitely encouraged me to take more risks with colors and patterns in my own home, and proven again that kelly wearstler is SO talented.

i took some notes in my head on some design elements that inspired me during my stay…

inspired by all the fun design elements at the proper, i came back and added a velvet chair with an animal print throw here in my living room. i love how cozy and laid back it makes the space feel now and has an unexpected touch. i’ve been with a designer, tiffany, on finishing the living room and she’s doing a great job making the room feel feminine and masculine, unique, and most of all it has personality! (more on those room resources soon!) i’ve been slowly designing each room with more thought over the past few years. next up is my bedroom…

my bedroom has been a place where i’ve played it very safe. mostly out of laziness, time, and the fact that it’s totally fine the way it is. bright, airy, easy. but i would love to add more visual interest to the bedroom and have the decor be a little more intentional and sophisticated. i think it would be really cool to add a patterned couch or chair to the window and create a separate space there. i would love to add some fun pillows or a quilt on the bed that made a statement. maybe instead of a chair or couch it would be cool to have a desk area by the window like this?

although i love these too…

i really admire how kelly seamlessly integrates many different periods of furniture into her rooms. it’s always the perfect mixture. i will be keeping that in mind as i work on my bedroom.

i always love when traveling brings new inspiration, and this definitely did that for me this time. it’s fun to do a solo trip from time to time too, i booked this with really no agenda and no travel companion and it ended up being a really inspiring time at a beautiful property. highly recommend the proper hotel and hotel tonight!

TRAVELING THROUGH ITALY FAVORITES

my boyfriend and i have been planning this big trip through italy for many many months now and it’s coming to an end very soon. i wanted to give you 25 of our very favorite things to do, eat, drink and see…along with some tips about traveling through italy. it’s been so memorable and i’m so happy we decided to just go for it!

thank you to my friends who gave me recommendations and i hope this list helps plan your next trip. it can be kinda stressful planning a longer trip (we did 1 month) but it’s so incredible to immerse yourself into a culture.

we started with 5 days in rome…

1. roscioli was one of our top favorite meals in rome. make a reservation at la salumeria (it’s busy!) and order la gricia pasta and the burrata with sun dried cherry tomatoes. the cheese and meat plates are also insanely good.

2. forno campo de’ fiori is an awesome little bakery in a popular square. grab a few slices (wish i could try them all! my favorite was the ham) and a beer and enjoy on the street while people watching. cheap price and amazing taste.

3. meridionale is a cozy little restaurant with eclectic decor and good food. i also really enjoyed walking around that neighborhood. please get the squash pie with melted fontina. so unique!

NOW TRAVEL: ROME >> POSITANO

it’s a little tricky to get to positano but not too bad. we knew that the pricy part of our trip was going to be in the south of italy. there’s so much tourism there and it feels like all the prices just go way up for hotels, food, and transportation. but it’s worth seeing for sure, so you gotta just let that part go. we chose 2 nights in positano and 2 nights in capri and ended up extending capri by two more days. it was definitely the right amount of time for us.

we took a train from rome to naples and then got a private car to drive us to the hotel. our hotel was gonna charge like 150 euros for the drive (around 1.5 hours) but we used this recommended driver that charged us 120 and she was really great. it’s gonna be your most expensive transportation probably. the roads are very windy with extreme cliffs, i am not sure i would recommend driving it yourself. but that’s just me.

you can email [email protected] and they wrote me back immediately. tell them what time you want to be picked up from the train and they handle it all from there.

DREAM POLARIS TO TEL AVIV

tel aviv travel | designlovefest
tel aviv travel | designlovefest

i’ve been working on my travel guide for israel (hoping our wifi is strong enough here in amsterdam that i can put that up this week!)

before those posts i’d like to share about our experience traveling to tel aviv. i was asked to take the new United Dream Polaris nonstop flight from newark to tel aviv and was able to bring justin along. we both had never been to israel and that plane looked awesome, so we jumped at the opportunity. let’s be honest, i don’t really travel in first or business class, i can count the number of times on one hand, so this was a real treat. you arrive to a drink, saks pillows, pajamas, a full lie down bed with a comforter, big tvs, cheese plates, an ice cream sundae cart, the best service…it was wild!

luckily we were able to sit next to each other and watch movies together. i guess we’re that couple that even hangs out on the plane and hits play and pause at the same time ha!

my favorite part of the flight was how spacious and comfortable it was. a 10 hour plane ride has never gone by as quickly, i was actually kinda bummed when it was over! it felt like i had time to relax, catch up on my murder mystery podcasts and books (up and vanished! obsessed), have wine and just chillllll. on the way home i needed to sleep because of a busy work week and i was able to lay down and fall asleep most of the way home. we flew coach a few days later and man, we missed those little dream pods!
