you may remember a few months ago, i worked on the set design for meghan trainor’s lips are movin’ video? well, a few weeks ago HP gave me the opportunity to meet back up with meghan in new york and interview her about the art direction of her very first tour! i actually listen to meghan’s album all the time on my way to work, she has such catchy songs and a great voice, so it was fun to hang out again…
we filmed a little behind the scenes video about the interview that you can watch below. we went on stage and took a look at meghan’s props and i also got to pass out a bunch of masquerade lips to all of her screaming fans in line before her show. it was so cute to see how excited they all were. (ps, make your own lips and tag #bendtherules on instagram!)
and i only covered one stop of the tour, there are tons of episodes about the costumes, dancers and more on HP’s youtube channel. here’s a look at our episode if you’d like to check it out…

i gotta say, one of the smartest decisions i’ve made is moving into a bigger studio. (besides painting it white!) i’ve already been able to use numerous times, i feel inspired, clear-headed and happy! something that made me very very happy was inviting a bunch of my friends over to my studio last weekend for a wrapping paper party. working with epson was a real dream, they let us all be creative and added a really unique twist on the event.
you can watch the video that arian created first. i love it so much! such good memories with my friends. and somehow the music makes me kinda teary eyed. maybe it’s PMS? regardless, it’s awesome.
my assistant joanie is always telling me i need to go way less overboard when it comes to these events. i try really hard, i do. but i fail every time. i guess i’m like my mother after all. i hired my best friend jen to do all of the styling. she was in charge of sourcing the supplies and setting them all up for the guests. i knew she would do an amazing job, and she definitely delivered.
jen hand painted a ton of white paper with black paint pens (turned out awesome!) and hung the designs all over the room for people to choose from. we also filled baskets with pretty paper from our friend’s urbanic paper shop. then we all just spread out and made a mess…
i handed out a labelworks printable ribbon kit to each of my friends when they arrived (just like a label maker but prints ribbons!) everyone got a kick out of writing funny phrases and quickly printing them.
yasmine made a green garland to decorate our brick wall and created a bunch of floral arrangements to make the space look festive. whoa nelly set up a beautiful brunch spread with yogurt parfaits, jam tarts, pastries and mini frittatas.
and of course the spiked coffee bar was a hit….
don’t you love my friend kristin’s huge bow? she wore it all day. and how about some gold foil wrapping paper for your presents this year? or hand making some like jen’s below…
i also asked my friends to bring some photos on their phone (with a buncha blogger friends that’s not a very difficult task. ha) the new epson printers can print photos right from your phone using wifi. so cool. we scanned a bunch of old photos and printed out instagrams to decorate our packages with. (win the printer, scanner and label maker below!)
we left out a bunch of scissors, tape, twine, stickers, ornaments, paint, pens etc…so everyone could just go crazy with their wrapping.
i mean, i knew my friends were creative but they seriously took it up a level for this. we had such a fun morning wrapping presents, drinking too many coffee/baileys concoctions, and catching up with each other. the holidays can be so busy for everyone, so it was nice to just relax.
luckily there’s still time to get all your friends together and throw one of these parties yourself. let me know if you do, okay? i always love seeing your photos & recreations. happy holidays! – bri
also, i hired asia to create some really adorable printable gift tags that we could use at the party and that you all can print off right here! enjoy. CLICK TO DOWNLOAD GIFT TAGS (2640)

i am more of a visual person. so i thought i would show you a bunch of the ways that videos are now evolving. from large brands to blogs, videos are showing up everywhere. in our blogshop video class (the next one is in two weeks in LA!) we go over tips on how to shoot your videos with a nice camera or even an iphone. we talk all about the equipment to buy, music resources and styling tricks. then we show you how to edit it all in photoshop. how to add text, title cards, organizing your files, adding music, and how to do it all quickly! it’s a one day crash course on videos for your business.
whether it’s a DIY project, a recipe or a fashion how-to…sometimes video helps explain the story better and gives people more clarification. for instance, i love what leaf tv is doing. short lifestyle videos with style…
or this video we made a few years ago showing all the different ways i like to wear scarves. video is also a great way to show your personality on your website, that doesn’t always translate through photos!
FOR YOUR SHOP:
my friend elise from pennyweight has her own curated shop filled with beautiful items from various makers. i think video is such a fantastic & simple way to show off the items in your shop! i think it really gives people a better idea of how the items look in their environment. check out this short video of an industrial lamp:
and what about lookbooks? they come alive on the video platform! make your shop shine just like this adorable vintage shoe video from the weaver house!
my friend joy over at oh joy recently did a before & after video of her office makeover with my boyfriend. loved the results! show off your space in more than just 2-D.
some of the favorite videos we have put together around here have been based on our travels & adventures. some more highly produced, and some just shot on my iphone and edited in photoshop (that’s what we teach you in our video blogshop!) this is when my boyfriend and i traveled to barcelona and he documented it…
and a fun, home video style one from our girls trip to palm springs. i just rewatched this and smiled the entire time. video is such an awesome way to bring you right back to happy times.
and family! the perfect way to document your little ones. i will probably take one million videos when i have kids of my own. i mean, how cute is birdie from bleubird’s videos. unreal…
gosh, this wedding gets me every time. the lovely day of max & margaux, shot by sharkpig. we have students that sign up so they can learn how to edit their own wedding footage and save some cash…
we found it was really helpful when we first started blogshop to document the experience so people would know what to expect from the workshop…
and these are only a couple of the ways that video is changing the online world. it’s time to jump on the bandwagon! what do you think about videos? do they intimidate you? excite you? bore you? what’s your take?
i think this might be one of my favorite looks to date. jimmy selected a perfect location for this shoot, which was very inspired by the 1970’s and one of my style icons, stevie nicks. i kind of freaked out when i saw the dove, i mean “edge of seventeen”…it was meant to be.
arian created a video capturing the movement and environmental style of the whole experience.
i guess i am kind of moving through the decades here, last week the 60’s and this week the 70’s. i love pulling images from a certain decade when creating a look. it is amazing how specific every time period is and how the clothing/style directly reflected what was going on in the world at that time. this look felt very free and liberating something that the 70’s hippie fashion embodied so well.
this specific look is vintage, but to achieve the same look you gotta layer. sheers, slips necklaces, sweaters (or in this case, a kimono)…you just add on until it feels right. you know who consistently pulls off this vibe? the olsen girls. (speaking of, the first blog i ever read was olsens anonymous.) they do the carefree style quite well if you ask me.
