IRELAND TRAVEL GUIDE!

Ireland travel guide | designlovefest

ok, i hope you save this post for travel tips because i SERIOUSLY recommend going to ireland. we both had never been and loved so much about it. the beautiful scenery, the people were so kind, the food and cocktails were great, the pubs were fun, and going in early november was perfect! we decided to pack a ton in and drive around a lot of the country so we could experience as much as possible in 4 days (which might have been extreme but i am still happy we did it because we saw so much)

we got to fly first class on aer lingus which was a real treat! it was fun to start our Ireland experience as soon as we got on the plane in san francisco. all of the staff was really friendly and we were able to curl up in our seats and watch movies and drink wine and really relax before hitting the ground running. they’re a global partner with alaska air which means you can use your alaska miles to book a flight to ireland! they served us scones and tea and delicious food, it really was a fun flying experience, i’d recommend it!

FIRST STOP: DUBLIN

a lot of people told me dublin feels really touristy. i’m sure there are parts that do, but overall i loved the vibe there. it might have been because we went in the off season so it wasn’t quite as crowded. but the streets were decorated for christmas, and there were tons of little shops and restaurants to pop into. i will just call out our favorites in each stop so you can write them down. we were also pleasantly surprised at the quality of food you get for the price in ireland!

cute lunch at hatch and sons for some stew and soda bread with butter (loved the bread everywhere we went)

we loved our dinner at the winding stair. excellent wine, cozy atmosphere with a view, and delicious food!

cocktails at the vintage cocktail club! what a treat. they truly appreciate the art of the cocktail and it feels like you have stepped back in time. we went early and didn’t need a reservation.

we also loved our dinner at fade street social. the scallops, truffle fries with bacon, yummy flatbreads…also a great street to wander around and find bars that aren’t as touristy.

the blind pig speakeasy. does it get old when a bookshelf flies open when you press a picture? not really. we spent our last night in this cave drinking cocktails and listening to live music by candlelight.

TRAVELING TO PERU

peru travel guide | designlovefest

i am finally home for a while in los angeles! it’s been a pretty intense few months of travel, but i’m grateful to have seen so many beautiful cultures and find inspiration from all over! it’s crazy how you will always take away something very important from each trip, whether that’s a lifestyle shift you want to implement, a whole new cuisine to experiment with, and i always seem to draw my eyes to colors and patterns from countries i’ve never been to.

PERU! what a wild ride. we went with a company called coast to costa and they planned the whole adventure. our host, andrew, was very fun and full of passion for travel so it was cool to go on a trip with him and a group of 10 other people. that always makes me a little nervous at first (i’m going to be writing about my social anxiety soon) but i pushed myself to open up and had such amazing results. we met some really really lovely people and it definitely made the trip more dynamic. plus it was nice to have them plan the details, it made things less stressful and allowed us to fit so much in. you can see all their upcoming trips here, including some to cuba!

we did a LOT, but here are some highlights from the trip. thank you so much to coast to costa for planning such a new and exciting experience in peru!!

we were staying in this adorable little town called Cusco. there were charming narrow streets with flowers on wooden balconies, colorful pom poms in the windows, alpacas and baby goats around most corners, lots of stairs, Inca stonework, and tons of history. we stayed at this b&b that’s a little outside of the main busy area on a quiet street.

we had a ton of different fun activities we could do once we rested and got adjusted to the altitude (which was pretty intense for us) we took a cooking class that was really fun! we made ceviche and risotto and pisco sours. i loved it!

NEW MEXICO TRAVEL GUIDE

New Mexico travel guide | designlovefest

a few weeks ago i was able to go to new mexico for a quick 5 day work trip with the tourism company new mexico true. it was my first time visiting new mexico and they planned a bunch of activities starting in albuquerque, then in santa fe, and ending in taos. i DEFINITELY want to go back and explore more with justin, i think we would really enjoy seeing more there together. it’s really the perfect place to go and road trip around.

we flew into albuquerque and headed to our hotel, the los pablanos historic inn and organic farm. the property has 50 rooms spread out on a working lavender farm, which was so beautiful and relaxing. we got to take a few little workshops in the greenhouse with some of the farmers, wandered in their amazing gift shop and cafe, and dined at the delicious campo (their restaurant on the property). we didn’t get much time to explore around albuquerque, but i really recommend staying on this farm and enjoying everything the property has to offer.

the next day we drove about an hour to santa fe. our first stop was the wild and crazy art installation meow wolf! it’s hard to even explain this museum in words. it kinda feels like pee wee’s playhouse in there. it’s psychedelic, experimental, fascinating, exciting, weird…there are tons of hidden doors and secret passageways. the group had mixed feelings about it, but i think it’s worth checking out. i personally wasn’t as inspired by the art, but i did love the experience! you get to go into a washing machine and end up in another room…so you kinda just have to do it.

HOTEL TONIGHT

hotel tonight | designlovefest

i recently stayed at the proper hotel in san franscisco, designed by kelly wearstler. i was extremely impressed and inspired by her design choices. i booked the hotel through one of my favorite apps, hotel tonight. i really like using their app and was thrilled when they asked if i wanted to work together as i use them all the time (did you know you can now book up to 100 days in advance!) i love staying at unique, design focused hotels when i travel to get inspiration for either a project i’m working on for the blog or something at home. i’ve been working on finishing up the interior at my house and so i’m always checking things out when i go someplace new. the app is also great for last minute trips, when justin and i were in europe we randomly decided we wanted to go to Amsterdam and i booked the Hoxton (which is a really cool spot!) on the app and we flew there the next day, such a fun spontaneous trip!

i love how there were so many mixed patterns and textures everywhere. i actually felt excited by all of the unexpected details throughout the space. the perfect velvet couches, retro vintage rugs, art deco style furniture, amazing art curation, unique lighting…it was really inspiring! and don’t forget to check out the rooftop bar for even more design ideas. this space has definitely encouraged me to take more risks with colors and patterns in my own home, and proven again that kelly wearstler is SO talented.

i took some notes in my head on some design elements that inspired me during my stay…

hotel tonight | designlovefest

inspired by all the fun design elements at the proper, i came back and added a velvet chair with an animal print throw here in my living room. i love how cozy and laid back it makes the space feel now and has an unexpected touch. i’ve been with a designer, tiffany, on finishing the living room and she’s doing a great job making the room feel feminine and masculine, unique, and most of all it has personality! (more on those room resources soon!) i’ve been slowly designing each room with more thought over the past few years. next up is my bedroom…

hotel tonight | designlovefest

my bedroom has been a place where i’ve played it very safe. mostly out of laziness, time, and the fact that it’s totally fine the way it is. bright, airy, easy. but i would love to add more visual interest to the bedroom and have the decor be a little more intentional and sophisticated. i think it would be really cool to add a patterned couch or chair to the window and create a separate space there. i would love to add some fun pillows or a quilt on the bed that made a statement. maybe instead of a chair or couch it would be cool to have a desk area by the window like this?

although i love these too…

i really admire how kelly seamlessly integrates many different periods of furniture into her rooms. it’s always the perfect mixture. i will be keeping that in mind as i work on my bedroom.

i always love when traveling brings new inspiration, and this definitely did that for me this time. it’s fun to do a solo trip from time to time too, i booked this with really no agenda and no travel companion and it ended up being a really inspiring time at a beautiful property. highly recommend the proper hotel and hotel tonight!

WINE COUNTRY!

napa travel | designlovefest

joanie and i just returned from an amazing weekend in the napa wine country. it was my first time ever being there and i can’t wait to go back. there is SO much to see and do. it feels like we barely scratched the surface. all of the food and wine we had was amazing and everything was so green and lush because of all of the recent rain. we stayed at the auberge du soleil and it couldn’t have been more relaxing. it’s perfectly located between saint helena and yountville which was crucial as we didn’t have much time and wanted to cover a lot of ground.

the service was amazing and we had dinner at their michelin-star restaurant and it was honestly one of the best meals i’ve ever had. the views are beautiful and the whole atmosphere at the resort is relaxing, neutral colors, fire place in our room, huge bathtub, and tons of fun amenities like free mini bar snacks!
