as much as i love color, i also adore a room full of neutrals. this allows the textures and fabrics to really shine. i was inspired by this photo of cholë moretz from wonderland magazine a few years ago. there is just something so striking about her sheer costume…

this is when i called in my favorite balloon trooper, jihan from geronimo balloons to create a dreamy tulle balloon. she knew exactly what to do. and that flowing beaded wonder of a dress? that’s an anna sui creation from BHLDN! the sequin details on that dress were beyond impressive. and i will say, it felt a little like my wedding day when i put that gown on…

the second neutral look was this short lace dress with lots of layered jewelry. and this vintage parasol added a nice texture.

when we are shooting these style shoots, i will say there are a few things that make it easier for me. since i am not a model, i sometimes find these shoots difficult because i am not sure what to do with my body or my face. something that makes it more natural is to have props. having something to interact with makes the photos less “hey i’m a model and i’m posing” and more like a story.

i love how max takes the direction that i give him and creates this dream world with the photos. he has such a talent for seeing a scene and looking at it in an abstract & artful way.

and speaking of art…my boyfriend shot a behind the scenes video that literally made my jaw drop. he has created a very very special video that i am excited to share with you next week!

as usual, here is how you can get the look (wouldn’t this be an adorable bridesmaid outfit?)…
delicate rings / lace dress / chiffon pom shoe clips / bracelet / star tiara / vintage parasol

…and make your own collection right here. it’s a great way to pull items for a shoot and keep them all organized! this was outfit my mood board.

mixing patterns is all about scale. i challenge you to look at different patterns together and see what you like. for example, in these photos the three patterns on the bottom half of the photo all work together, but adding a similarly scaled 4th floral might have been overkill. HOWEVER, add an oversized print and now we’re talkin…

we also put some colored chalk in my braid that was pretty fun for a change. i look like i should be prancin around coachella or something, huh?

here we have a little floral on floral on floral on tambourine…

isn’t this quote so true? it really believe in the emotions colors can bring us. and when you mix them all together…it can be pretty powerful. look at me gettin’ all emo on you guys now.
here’s the little collection that i put together in case you want to recreate this look! (loving the peplum trend, aren’t you?)

shop my beso collection: peplum top / cardigan / ring / purple bracelet / yellow bracelet / flower / shoes / earrings / floral jeans (i am wearing these similar paige denim jeans)

i just have so much fun coming together with my friends and dreaming up new concepts for these style shoots. this month we wanted to do something completely different than the last time i shot with max.

for the month of may there will be 4 very different looks each tuesday. we were lucky enough to team up with beso (an awesome shopping site) to make these funky shoots possible! each week, i will be creating get the look collections that go along with each outfit!
i always put together mood boards for my photographers and stylists so they can get a feeling for the shoot and know how to prepare. i also just really enjoy making them. i thought you might like to see where my ideas came from and a little behind the scenes on the process of these shoots…

…and can we talk about how funny it is that i remembered after the shoot about that child model photo of me right above! wow, i look the same as my 3 year old self!

i knew i wanted to have a tux for one of the looks. i just love the menswear look with little hits of femininity (like those amazing feather trimmed BHLDN shoes!)

luckily my boyfriend arian is making a behind the scenes video of all of these shoots combined! (coming out on the 4th week!) in the video you will see me dancing & posing like a straight up fool for this series. it’s a good thing max knows how to make me look somewhat normal in the photos.

if you know me, you know i love all things jazz. you can find me driving around town in my convertible gettin’ doooown to some soul music. it’s just something that really makes me really happy. so the photos were also inspired from that.

see you back here next tuesday for the next shoot! it’s quite bright!

i would totally wear this outfit to a party. would you? it’s unexpected! and the fit of it is still flattering & girly. here’s how you can achieve a very similar look…

floral top, bright pants. you’ve seen it before. but this look has been going through normal rotation over here. i mean look how amazing taylor t looks doing it.

when angela and i went out to shoot these she said the shirt looked kinda like something her grandma would wear. which made me laugh. and it’s true, those boxy patterned button ups aren’t the most flattering…but i just love them. this one kinda looks like a cheesy painting but somehow isn’t cheesy in shirt form. or maybe it is. maybe i’m cheesy.

anyways! here’s how you can achieve this grandma chic look yourself, ladies…

shop tops: yellow tank / silk top / corset
shop pants: purple / red / pink

i found this vintage striped dress and shortened it a bit. it’s a great look for a business meeting when i want to look professional, but not too serious. i’m also a big fan of cap toe shoes lately. this black and cream pair is so timeless.

there is a little side street in silver lake that was painted with these large green polka dots. pretty fun. imagine if all streets were this loud?

i’m not sure why you aren’t all cutting bangs. they are such a nice change. anyways, this outfit is sort of candy striper meets circus. it’s also a pretty fun date outfit.

this outfit would’ve been too sweet for my taste, but i threw in some black tights & messy hair to balance it out. i do love the flair of that skirt though! and i’ve been wearing these twistbands around my wrist as bracelets & as hair ties. (i like the metallic ones too)

well, you guys told me that you were into the get the look from last week. so i made another one for ya…

nail polish / twistbands / heart shirt / striped skirt / yellow ring / shoes / tights

i have been running around planning the next style shoot with max. the last one was so much fun to put together, and we have a new set of concepts this round! i look forward to sharing with you all.
okay, so don’t judge me and my terrible editing skills (i know, it’s a cheesy ending ha!) but i had all these iphone videos from the day of the first shoot (using this 8mm app)…so tonight i had a glass of wine and put them together in iMovie real quick. you guys should get that app, it’s a good time.
in other news:
• our chicago blogshop sold out (yay!) and there are still a few spots left in portland!
• i am off to san francisco today for 5 days, staying with my friend victoria! (i always love your food recs. keep em comin!)
• some big changes happening over here at designlovefest (and change usually freaks me out) but this time i am super excited!
happy weekend! – bri

i am not really sure what made me cut bangs. i came back from europe, saw this picture and that day I made the chop. i have had the same hairstyle for 10 years it feels like. booooooring. i just needed a change. do you usually cut your hair impulsively as well?
they have actually been surprisingly easy to style too (i was so worried about this, considering i usually just roll out of bed and go)…a couple minutes hangin with the blow dryer and that’s it. it sure is nice to change your look up and you’d be surprised how differently clothes feel when you have a new hairstyle!

i love this new vintage blazer i found! i like to pair it with a patterned shirt underneath and jeans. i am not sure if you noticed, but i rarely wear blue denim jeans because they always stretch out and irritate me. but these madewell ones are a nice fit.

i thought it would be fun to start doing “get the looks” (below) every now and then. let me know if you like seeing these on the blog!
