STYLED / 18 RUFFLES

ruffles | designlovefest

ruffles are everywhere right now. they’re on the hems of skirts and dresses, delicate sleeve details, on the bottom of pants and even on shoes. i get it, the word “ruffle” can be very polarizing. your mind automatically thinks overly girly, super sweet and feminine. but these ruffles are being used in all sorts of ways and on tons of different styles. when it’s done in a linen or a solid color it’s somehow sophisticated feminine. i like ruffles on the asymmetrical hem of a skirt paired with a super simple top and sneakers. i’m also very into the wrap dress with a little ruffle on the hem, the perfect mix of pretty and sexy. – joanie

Reformation dress ($218) – i’m crazy about this dress but unfortunately, i’m buntline won’t allow me to wear this style so for all the ladies who can, please wear this for me!
Free people swing dress ($70) – the perfect summer dress. i love swing dresses because they have so much movement and the fabric is light weight so you can still see your shape underneath. fyi: the trick with oversized dresses is to make sure the shoulders fit.
Anna Sui top  ($200) – cute, cropped and printed. love the ruffled hem and sleeve detail.
Forever 21 tiered top ($38) – this top comes in three colors and i kind of want them all. it’s a lot of fabric so wear it with something fitted on the bottom to balance it out.
Madewell wrap skirt ($88) – this mini is perfect for someone on the shorter side or if you don’t mind showing a whole lot of let. i love the sweet floral print  and that they show it tucked into a more structure top making the whole look not overly feminine.
Free People olivia dress ($260) – i love this color purple and this is great example of ruffles being used in moderation.
Loeffler Randall heel ($228) – i know, i’m always linking to Loeffler Randall shoes but i love that this is a sophisticated color (navy) with a playful ruffle.
Temperley London top ($430) – definitely the most feminine piece that i’m including but it has so many sweet details it had to be added. and picture it tucked into a pair of light, worn in, fitted jeans.
One-shoulder ruffle top ($60) – cotton/linen and crisp white. this has summer written all over it.

and a few ruffled posts we love from pinterest!

i have a million style post ideas swimming around in my head but can’t seem to pick one idea to stick with so today we’re just going to call this post friday finds. half of the online stores seem to be having sales which means that we’re in transition, they’re getting rid of spring merchandise and stocking summer pieces! it’s all about white, ruffles, wrap dresses, pops of peach, pink and coral, linen and gauze. one of my favorite things to wear to the beach in the summer is an oversize white cotton button up shirt. i’ve had great luck finding them at thrift stores, look in the men’s section. don’t worry if it’s large on you, you can always tie the front up if needed! – joanie

J.Crew underwire bikini top ($58) – i bought this bikini top years ago and it’s still one of my favorites. you can shop it by bra size which makes all the difference because small, medium and large just don’t cut it for everyone. i have a large chest and it can be hard to find swimsuits and this one is a winner.

Levi denim skirt ($70) – finding the perfect paid of jean shorts is like finding a needle in a hay stack. i don’t want them too short, or too tight and finding the perfect combination feels impossible so instead, this summer i’m opting for the jean skirt. much more flattering and just as easy to wear!

Embroidered top ($158) – i love all of the detailing on this top, the tiny orange stripe, the delicate ruffle on the sleeve, and the v neck that makes the oversized shape much more flattering. i won’t be spending $150 + on this top but i’m using it as inspiration for future shopping trips.

Loeffler Randall tie sandal ($375) – i don’t own a single pair of Loeffler Randall shoes but i consider myself to be a big fan of the brand and love seeing the collections they put out each season. their colors, gentle use of embellishments and timeless styles are inspiration for shoe shopping even if you can’t afford a pair.

Sandro star top ($230) – i love this oversized star top and it’s be cute with the jean skirt above and also over a tank dress or with a dark pair of jeans to off set the light blue. (also a very chic 4th of july option!)

Pink sunglasses ($118 + 25% off!) – i  love a pair of really light colored sunglasses in the summer and these have a great mix of metal and plastic which makes them more sophisticated than many other colored options out there.

Ruffle wrap dress ($60) – we’re going to feature an entire post on ruffles because they are everywhere right now but i wanted to get this $60 romantic ruffle dress on your radar as quickly as possible. cute with white sneakers, flattering wrap waist, delicate print, it checks all the boxes for the perfect summer dress.

Clare V. canvas tote ($204) – i’ve seen a few girls carrying this bag around LA and it’s so cute and the perfect summer tote. the canvas with the stripe and the size makes it a really versatile, every day bag that will pair with a lot!

H&M high waisted shorts ($30) – shorts are hard to find. i bought these over the weekend because i went out of town and realized half way there that i had forgotten my swimsuit and shorts but it ended up being a win because i love these. high waisted with a little pleating in the front. chic and flattering!

while buying new clothing and accessories can be a fun way to mix up your wardrobe it’s not always financially possible to shop for new pieces every season. i’m personally currently trying to cut back on my spending and shopping is one of the first things that goes. i wanted to share a few styling tips for mixing up and revamping your current wardrobe just the way it is, no new purchases required!  – joanie

– i think the first place to start is with a closet clean out. go through your closet and pull out items you know you don’t wear or that make you feel any sort of negative emotion. for me, that’s pieces i bought and regret, things that no longer fit, items that have stains that i hope will someday magically disappear or items i still love but that are too damaged to wear (i.e. your favorite jeans with six holes in them). if you’re like me you’ll probably discover overlooked pieces that you love and have forgotten about. if you’re on the fence with giving anything away my rule is to give it one last try, wear it for a day, and by the end of the day you’ll likely know if it stays or goes.

bd265ed4883c43fc155c06ecb61ed56b

– don’t limit items to just day or evening – if you have a cocktail dress you love, wear it during the day with flats and a casual jacket, throw a t-shirt on under a dress to make it more day time appropriate, or pair with sneakers to make it more day appropriate. your favorite dress doesn’t need to be saved for special occasions only. i also like doing the reverse of that and if you feel like you have nothing to wear out, just elevate your day wear. your favorite jeans with sky high heels, a bold chocker or some big earrings, a fitted tee, blazer and a bold lip.

– make small at home alterations – i like cropping my own jeans, i had a few pair of straight leg denim that just wasn’t cutting it full length but once cropped i started wearing all the time. don’t worry too much about making your hem perfectly straight. in fact, the uneven hem denim is a trend right now. i like the hem to be about 4″-5″ above the ankle bone. or, skip the cutting and give your jeans a nice big cuff.

– play with different color combinations – i know we all have our rituals, wearing the same t-shirt with the same pants, or skirt. but try mixing it up, don’t be afraid to mix patterns, bold colors, textures. i recommend having an hour to yourself in front of the mirror after you clean out your closet and just trying on different pieces to see what might go together. you’ll probably find yourself thinking, “why have i never worn this outfit before?!”

3159879cc9398fb35a7a56d7de782df3

– wear a dress as a skirt by adding a t-shirt or button down on top that can be tied at the waist – the trick to wearing a dress as a skirt is to make sure the waist is cinched. one option is to wear a button down and tie it high and tightly at your waist (actual waist, wear it goes in just below your rib cage, not below!). or, take a t-shirt and cut it about 4″ up from the front center and then you’ll have two sides to tie together. p.s. i thrift for a lot of my t-shirts so i don’t feel stressed cutting them up.

3a253169b5c1013de37ae033df74bd74

-mix up your proportions – pair a short skirt with an oversized sweater, wide leg pants with a tiny top, a slim knee length dress with a big trench or long open sweater

1020

-and if you’re really wanting to shop, hit your local thrift store! if you feel overwhelmed by thrifting, here are a few simple tips to make it more manageable. go through racks quickly by feeling for fabrics, you can tell when you touch something quality (cotton, linen, silk, etc), look for prints – they’re easy to spot in a rack full of clothing, go for the sweaters – when people clean out their closets to make space they’ll often giveaway larger bulkier items like coats, jackets and sweaters. i’ve found so many great cashmere sweaters at thrift stores, especially in the men’s section.

most important tip is to have fun! fashion is meant for experimenting, try new styles, see what feels right!

i missed a week on the styled posts because things have been crazy around here but we’re back on track now and ready to go! summer is almost here and it’s time to show some toe. there are a ton of cute sandal options out there right now and i’ve rounded up 9 favorites that are all under $100 (some of them far below that too!). for the most part, i like to stick a slide because they’re so easy to put on/don’t require any extra straps, and they also tend to be more comfortable because you don’t have anything rubbing against the back of your ankle and foot. there are some really cute espadrille out there though and they deserve some acknowledgement too. i even included an adidas sandal because honestly, i wear mine all the time and they’re seriously comfortable. – joanie

– Steve Madden sandal ($50) these are very girly but i think they’d be cute in the summer with a pair of cut off jean shorts or baggy denim pants. because the shoe is wider, they will also be flattering on the leg!
– Silver-toned mid heel ($23) i tried these on in the store and loved them and now regret not buying them. they are understated once you have them on and the block heel is the perfect amount of lift.
– Velvet lace up flat ($40) – navy blue velvet and those thin straps and really just a match made in heaven.
– Sea green bow slides ($60) – exaggerated bows with a side of jute.
– Puffy knotted slide ($20) throw these in your bag for a day at the pool or beach.
– Leather slip in sandal ($35) – i have a pair of this style sandal by Joie and they are my favorite. the double strap looks really chic on and they age really well since they’re made of leather.
– Knotted satin slides ($20)  – so cute and only 20 bucks!
– Leather espadrille ($98) – i know white shoes are not always so practical but i think they are chic and i love this pair.
– Adidas sandal ($45) – as i mentioned above i wear my adidas sandals all the time. i have the classic version but our friend jesse has this style and they look so cool.

memorial day is right around the corner which means we’re about to be seeing a lot more white in fashion! i don’t subscribe to the no white after labor day and before memorial day rule but it definitely is a color that you naturally gravitate to more in the warmer summer months. it’s such a chic timeless option and i continually find myself wanting to purchase more white pieces for my closet. below are a few favorite (and reasonably priced!) piece in white that bri and i found at ASOS

– Linen jumpsuit ($64) – linen and cotton are my go-to fabrics in the summer. i know linen wrinkles like crazy but i don’t care, i like the worn in look and i think it’s okay to wear it even when it doesn’t look perfect. the open back is so pretty and the invisible zipper at the back keeps the lines clean.
– Lace peplum top ($77) – all white lace, all the time! you can’t miss with that combo. i own several white lace and eyelet tops and i have no plans of stopping anytime soon
– Beach bag ($32) – durable canvas bag for all your summer day outings.
– Lace & pom pom maxi dress ($60) – for those of you lucky enough to go without a bra this one is for you. add a pair of hoops and flat sandal and you’re good as gold.
– Bow detail skater dress ($60) – a pretty little structure party dress for your next balmy date night.
– Fruit embroidered bag ($32)
– Gathered waist band suit ($32) – i own a swimsuit with this deep-v cut and it’s very flattering. the legs might be a little high cut on this one but i say give it a go!
– White tee ($35) – super soft cotton is the perfect thing to throw on after you’ve been in the sun all day.
– Ruffle blouse ($54) – this might be my favorite one of the whole round up. the sleeve, the eyelet, the lace panel, all of it is so good!
