what do hippies, Gatsby era flappers and country western line dancers all have in common? if you haven’t already guessed it’s their allegiance to fringe!
more than your average ornamental trim we’re fascinated with the emphasis fringe gives to movement. whether you’re letting your inner go go dancer cut a rug on a light up dance floor or your swaying back and forth to a little fleetwood mac in an open field, wearing fringe looks good and feels good.
a modern reworking of a southwestern style leather jacket, an all natural cotton dress or a romantic curtain for the apartment, the newest incarnations of fringe add texture and visual impact to simple shapes and styles.

what I love about statement pieces like these fancy pants is that they make an outfit all on their own. You don’t need much else to pull off a fun look. I’m pretty much into the 1st pair, love the yellow stripes. Which one would you dare to wear? –stephanie

it’s not exactly a sweater and it’s not a coat, it’s somewhere in the middle and my latest obsession. i guess we could call it the california coat because it’s the perfect light layer but it’s a transitional piece for all areas of the country, cold and warm. traditionally, they were created to protect a rider from trail dust while on their horse but they’re now part of mainstream fashion. the best thing about the duster is that it’s dramatic due to the length and layers of fabric but it’s cozy and easy to throw on over everything. you’ll notice that most of the outfits you see them paired with are really simple, jeans and t-shirts, plain dresses, neutrals, etc. but with the addition of the long layer on top it becomes instantly chic. take a look at the examples below for proof. – joanie
when purchasing your own there are a few things to keep in mind. if you’re used to buying things that are fitted this may feel strange to you since most of them are oversized. one area to pay attention to is the shoulders, your shoulders will be the only place of structure and fit so you’ll want to make sure the duster fits you well here, framing your shoulders to give some shape to the jacket. the second thing is that they will often come with waist ties or buttons but it’s my belief that they are best left open. i’m not opposed to a tight tie at your true waist, where the fabric pulls in tightly in folds but once you add buttons, it all becomes too shapeless. in a lot of instances, the reason the duster works is because it’s paired with slimmer fitting pieces below, giving the body some shape.
shop the above: asos pale pink duster, jil sander cashmere duster, malene birger jacket, forever 21 faux fur duster, zara oversized sweater, elizabeth and james sweater jacket and topshop duster vest.
when i’m hanging with my friends there is a lot of, “i love that, where did you get it?” or, “i have that same candle!” it’s sort of inevitable with people who you’ve known for so long, you each have your own thing going on but there is crossover in taste and style. that’s one of the reasons why i love buying gifts for my friends. it’s easy to find things they’ll love because i love them too. and, sometimes i’ll add an extra one to the cart as a little gift to myself. old navy asked me what gifts i’d like to gift myself and my friends this year so i put together the above guide. and, as a bonus, everything is $50 or under!
