YEAR-END WITH PAYPAL

man, this year has been a really challenging in so many ways and at the same time extremely rewarding as well. it’s strange that two polar emotions can exist at the same time but i’m sure all my fellow small business owners know what i mean when i say it definitely happens more often than not. owning a business is definitely about taking it all in stride, the good, the bad and the ugly. PayPal asked if i wanted to collaborate on a year-end campaign around being a small business owner and share a bit of my journey and i gladly accepted. i’ve been doing this for about 9 years now and i still have so much to learn and at the same time feel really proud of how far i’ve come.

PayPal is a website (and an app!) i’ve used since day one, to send out my own invoices, pay subcontractors, manage blogshop student payments, my social media workshop, my affiliate relationships, etc. it was an app that really helped me when i was super short on time and managing a ton of projects and made it really easy to send and receive payments and invoices. it’s an app we still use often, it loads directly into our quickbooks, makes it easy to send international payments (because wire transfers are such a pain) and it’s all around something i believe in and i’m happy to support. the business side of DLF is something we’ve been thinking about a lot more lately, so often i’m focused on the creative and the projects but the contracts, invoicing, taxes, licensing, etc is such a big part of running a business that i want to start sharing more about that aspect.

today i took some time to look back through the years at memories of running my own business. it’s important to take a second to do this for yourself!!

i know for me, as a business owner the end of a year can be really hard. we feel emotionally drained and exhausted from managing so much and it feels hard to make plans for the year ahead. i want this post to feel like an arm around your shoulder, a word of encouragement that you’re not alone and a positive push into the year ahead. i thought it would be fun to do a little recap quiz so we created these downloads that you can print off. one is to focus on looking back at 2018 and then using that reflection to build goals and a vision for 2019. we kept it simple so it’s not overwhelming to fill out, you can do it now or maybe half way through your holiday break when you’ve had some downtime. it’s suppose to be a fun exercise, so don’t think too hard, just trust your gut and write what comes to your mind.

i’m sharing my list and also a few project highlights from the past 9 years of owning DLF. growth is hard and takes time and i really believe we all gotta support each other’s dreams as much as possible.

my personal and professional HIGHS:

i got engaged this year! that was a big one that makes me really happy. i also put in a tremendous amount of hard work on myself and my mental health. i went to therapy every monday all year, i went on medicine and finally started dealing with some really tough stuff from my past. i still have a ways to go but the difference is amazing and very freeing. it’s helped me at work and at home.

oh! and i got my blood drawn for the first time EVER and went to the dentist! two huge anxieties that had been weighing on me for many years. and good news at both…major relief there.

a few work highlights were some photoshoots that i art directed for Gorman, Little Tienda and mumu. we also launched a line of designlovefest shoes for Keds and a luggage line at Target! i went on a really inspiring trip with my friend victoria to spain and portugal. a huge one is that i started cooking school which has helped me find a whole new passion and new projects to work on because of it. samsung is one that sticks out in my mind who let me completely run with my cooking show ideas this year and i had a blast.

some LOWS that i am working on:

i have a lot of money anxiety and fear that causes me to obsessively save while disconnecting from my finances at the same time. next year i want to get ahold of this and be more in touch with the financial side of my business. that means accounting and all those things i tend to avoid because of my anxieties or lack of knowledge in the area. i think this will make money conversations with my partner and at work a lot easier and less stressful.

i’ve also been working on myself so much that it’s brought to light some toxic relationships in my life that I need to find more separation with. as someone who used to struggle with co-dependency, i am seeing now how that can really wear on you emotionally and physically.

with work, i want to continue to focus on the projects and clients that make me happy and creatively fulfilled. there were a couple this year that really took it out of me with high demands and pressure. that takes the creativity out of it for me and becomes quite a bummer. justin and I would love to move to amsterdam for a short time before we think about kids and find artists to collaborate with and show new scenery! cooking, travel, and entertaining is still going to be a big priority and something i love sharing with you all!

You are such a lovely and honest corner of the Internet! Thank you for sharing. Moving to Amsterdam for a little sounds like such a rad idea! DO IT! DO IT! As someone who lived in places as far flung as Beijing and Morocco and Timbuktu before kids I can say it’s SUCH a wonderful thing!

What a great post. Most end of the year/new year blog posts are very happy, happy, pie, pie & gloss over a lot of the frustrations/anxiety about things that have happened during the year & about challenges ahead. You nailed the relationship I have with $ on the head – saving obsessively while simultaneously disconnecting bc of lack of knowledge of the subject. Def will strive to do better on this in 2019. Have a great holiday season!
