TRADER JOE’S PICKS 2

trader joe's favorites | desisgnlovefest

a couple of years ago we created this post of all of our favorite items to pick up at Trader Joe’s. we had a great time putting it together but one of the best outcomes of that post were the amazing comments left by people sharing what they buy and the recipes they make with their favorite tj’s items. the comments are gold, seriously, check them out. since trade joe’s adds new items to their store monthly we thought it was time for an update to that post. below are more of our favorites plus two easy side dishes that we love to make. please comment with anything we missed or ideas/recipes you’ve been loving to make. we’re always looking for new items to try and your comments are the best way to find those items!

the items above are our favorite baking and condiment items: organic tahini for homemade hummus, the most addicting garlic spread that i put on everything, nutritional yeast for making cashew cheese and sprinkling on popcorn, their cake mix is great and my friend makes it with adding orange zest to punch up the flavor, you’d never know it was store bought when you taste it, blanched almond flour for almond cookies and gluten free baking, the grass fed buffalo milk butter is a stand out to me. i’m a big believer in butter and this one is made with wholesome ingredients. their garlic salt grinder with a mixture of four seasonings for adding flavor to any dish. the mixed nut butter is something i had been wanting to find for a long time after having it in an acai bowl, individual coconut oil packets are great if you’re into oil pulling like i am. ghee for its many benefits  and also the avocado oil for it’s lower price tag and high smoke point.

– preheat your oven to 400 degrees. thinly slice the sweet potatoes, soak them in water for a few minutes, rinse until the water runs clear. dry them completely. put them in a bowl with the avocado oil. i like to use the tj’s garlic salt grinder because it has sea salt, roasted garlic, onion and parsley all in one. grind generously over fries, toss to coat and then lay in a single layer on a baking sheet. bake for about 7-10 minutes on each side. serve with garlic spread!

simple bruschetta crostini
• 1 organic baguette
• 1 jar tomato bruschetta (in the canned aisle)
• whole milk mozzarella cheese

• pre-heat broiler. thinly slice desired amount of baguette. lay in a single layer on baking sheet. spoon bruschetta spread onto each. cover with a thin piece of mozzarella cheese. broil until golden and bubbly 2-4 minutes.

and you cannot forget the snacks! their red pepper dip is a great additional to any cheese, meat and bread appetizer set up, whole milk plain yogurt with cream top – i think i jumped up and down when i first found this, inner peas – if you don’t know about this addicting snack, now you know, bruschetta spread as mentioned above, sliced brioche for french toast or just a decadent peanut butter and jelly. this bread is normally hard to track down and it comes pre-sliced, win win! ancient grain granola to pair with that yogurt – it’s packed with goodness like buckwheat groats, chia seeds and red quinoa, pb&j chocolate bar – the perfect little indulgence, their hawaiian style chips are the best, bbq is my favorite, super seed mix if you’re like me and don’t want to keep all sorts of random packs of seeds and grains in your pantry for your smoothies, tabbouli – love this with everything, especially brown rice and a runny egg, shishito peppers – pan fry with a little oil until they are blistered, yum!

Try smearing some of the red pepper dip on their frozen garlic naan, topping with caramelized onions, mozzarella, and goat cheese for an easy pizza. I also use it as a marinade for grilled chicken. I’ve also used that cake mix for a bananas foster-inspired upside down cake, with a quick rum caramel sauce and bananas sliced long ways.

I live pretty far from a Trader Joes but I try to go once a month as a monthly treat! I will definitely be adding some of these items to my shopping list! ♥

Love all these suggestions! My husband works at Trader Joe’s, so I know all the secrets 😉 First off, everything is either locally sourced and/or ethically produced. They really do listen to customers so if you have recommendations of things you do/don’t like or would like to see, speak up. If you tried something and didn’t like it or you got something and it went bad (i.e. fruit/veg), you can take it back to the store and they’ll replace it for free.

I’ve also listed a couple of my favorite items (maybe not so well known, but you have to try them at least once!):
*Acai packets – frozen section: perfect for smoothies and super cheap in comparison to any other acai product you’ll find
*Yellow cold press juice – by the refrigerated juices: best for inflammation, healed my thyroid with it, seriously addicting
*Reduced guilt guacamole – by the refrigerated salsas and hummus: you can eat it in one sitting and it’s ridiculously filling; best crowd pleaser
*Italian truffle cheese – refrigerated cheeses: cheapest amazing truffle cheese I’ve ever found
*Cinnamon square cereal – cereal section: this is something you have to snag while it’s in stock because it’s constantly running out, you will never eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch again (or adult food for that matter, this stuff is addicting)
*Strawberry chia seed smoothie – by refrigerated juices: I could go broke drinking those (*so* good)
*Joe’s O’s Ice Cream – frozen dessert section: you will never eat an oreo ice cream again
*Chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches – frozen dessert section: 4 to a box is just too little, in my opinion
*Chocolate + vanilla macarons – frozen dessert section: it’s almost Paris, almost…
*Cheese puff things (kind of like crunch cheetos) – by snack section w/ chips: they come in a smaller bag than cheetos, but that also means less guilt whenever you finish them in a day, right?

Anyway, we don’t go for those things every time. Most of the time, we go for all their fruits + veg, which is seasonal so it’s always pretty great!

Ugh best post! Trying that garlic spread asap. My go-to’s are:

-Unsweetened vanilla almond milk in the refrigerated section…I swear it tastes better than any other brand I’ve tried.
-Authentic greek feta in brine…the bomb!
-Raw cashews & raw almond butter…I mean you honestly can’t get better prices anywhere else on those two items especially.
-Balsamic glaze..drizzle over tomato, mozz and basil salad…yesssss.
-Smoked salmon..again with the awesome price and selection.
-Organic brown rice marshmallow treats…I feel like these are so underrated. If you like Rice Krispy Treats, then you’ll like these and they are a little better for you + 100 cal.

these are all such great items and ones that i’ve never tried! thanks so much for sharing! Xx

Trader Joe’s is definitely at the top of my Things I Miss About the US list. I go nuts there when we come home to visit.

I have soo many favorites! My must haves include:
    – sugar snap peas, always super fresh and way cheaper than elsewhere
    – high protein tofu, it’s basically pressed tofu, so it’s super firm- perfect to bake with some soyaki
    – frozen japanese fried rice; i add in more edamame and serve with veggies for a quick meal
    – the pb stuffed pretzels!
    – pumpernickel pretzel sticks
    – new vegan cultured butter is delicious
    – the entire dried fruit and nut aisle makes me happy

    designlovefest says:

must try that butter, thanks for all the great recommendations!

    Cindy H says:

One of my long-time picks is the cheddar with carmelized onions. I love it! Also, for Indian food the frozen paneer tika masala can’t be beat, and for an indulgent breakfast, the wicked sticky buns.

    designlovefest says:

i just had that cheese for the first time, soooo good!

    Heidi says:

*Green Dragon hot sauce-so good on everything
*Black bean and cheese taquitos-pop these guys in the oven and top with lettuce, plain greek yogurt, tomatoes, and some of the green dragon hot sauce for a quick dinner
*All of their Indian food is amazing
*Masala Veggie patties-these are awesome with their Indian options as a meat alternative
*Kouigns Amann-a heavenly pastry that can be found in their freezer section near the chocolate and almond croissants.
