if you’re anything like us, wrapping a gift is just as important as finding the perfect treasure that goes inside the box and we’re always looking for the most unique ways to make a package extra special.

with the gift giving holidays steadily approaching we set out to come up with a fun and festive way to take your wrapping skills to the next level, and it’s easy enough that anyone can do it, really. all you need is some wrapping paper, scissors, a few of our favorite Scotch® tapes and some ribbon. by simply layering patterns on patterns you’ll be impressing your friends and family with your one of a kind gifts in no time.

a while back we showed you our secrets to a perfectly wrapped gift box, if you missed it be sure to check that out here for the basics!

once you have your boxes covered in a base layer, cut long strips of paper in a variety of patterns and widths…

this is also a great way to use your paper scraps and get more mileage out of your wrapping paper, even the skinniest little piece of paper can be put to good use!

after you have cut a bunch of strips fold them in half lengthwise and cut scalloped and zig zag shapes along the edges.

take some time to experiment with the length and width of your shapes, it’s helpful to have a variety of sizes when you begin to layer your pieces so that you can play around with your designs to find the most striking combos.

to make fringe all you have to do it cut little pieces along the length of your folded paper taking care to leave a little space along the folded edge. to make it feel extra fringy unfold and run you fingers along the edges so that the paper curls up a little.

for your first layer use one of your widest pieces and wrap a strip around the center of your package. to help keep the pieces in place while your working it is helpful to use Scotch® Double Sided Tape on the front of the box and secure by overlapping the paper strip with Scotch® GiftWrap Tape on the back. continue adding layers, stacking narrower pieces on top and alternating shapes and fringe.

we love to use Scotch® Expressions WashiGlitter and Metallic Tapes to our top layer to add extra sparkle and help secure all the layers.

add finishing touches like extra pieces of garland with Scotch Double Sided Tape.

or use a colorful ribbon to tie it all together.

during the holidays, we all want to make things that are a little extra special, it’s part of what makes this time of year something we look forward to. and even though we are often extra busy with celebrations and family get togethers sometimes it’s actually easy and simple to turn the ordinary into something truly spectacular. and, if you’ve got a great idea, you could enter for the opportunity to win  $10,000 by entering Scotch(R) Brand’s Most Gifted Wrapper™ Contest by 12/9/15*

I was wondering if it would be okay to borrow one of your pictures for instagram (@Designstorestokey), if we credit the photo and idea to you? To give our customers fresh ideas for wrapping the items bought in our little shop? Best, Julie
