tgif! you’ve made it through another work week and destination weekend is just up ahead. but before you board that train let us give you a little fun fact. may it serve as the catalyst to your weekend mindset or an interesting topic of conversation that you can keep in your back pocket for dinner parties and bar banter. for this inaugural post we present “oodles of poodles.”

you may not know this but poodles are actually not french, they’re from germany! And those hair cuts, well they aren’t just about looking good, it turns out they were created for function. that’s right, that crazy poodle cut originated out of necessity.

while they are best known for their slender elegance and cotton candy like fur they are also both intelligent and athletic. in fact they were bred to be sporty water dogs, retrieving fowl, fishnets and even used in water rescue operations. the name comes from the German pudel or pudelhund which translates to waterdog. in France they call them caniche, a reference to their duck like swimming abilities.

and that haircut is not just about looking stylish, the origins of the infamous fancy poodle hairdo is functional. yes you read that right, it serves a purpose. a poodle’s coat keeps them warm in the water, but it is also gets heavy when it’s wet. to streamline and lighten their load while afloat the hair is trimmed but left long on the chest and head to maintain body temperature. the adorable ankle pom poms help keep their joints warm and the top knot prevents hair from getting in their eyes as they swim. bows were later added to help identify the dogs during water competitions. during the reign of the French king Louis XVI poodles were groomed to mimic the fanciful hair styles of the 18th century nobility. fancy that.
