something i’ve learned after blogging for 4 years…you NEED resources. and you need to organize them. you may think of an idea and there should be a list that you can refer to so that you can make that idea happen. we use google docs so everyone on the team can easily add to the resource page.
we all want to make original content. i know for me, the posts that i have been most excited about where when i collaborated with other creatives! (this flower bomb, a backyard party, benefit beauty posts, my living room, style shoots, blogshop events) all of those posts took multiple people to make them possible, and they also made the process more enjoyable. (and easier!) here’s our list we keep around the office…
KEEP READING AFTER THE JUMP…
photographers: and you can even make sub-categories here…who is best at shooting portraits? is there one of them better at interiors? usually photographers have strengths in certain areas.
videographers: give your blog posts some motion! it’s time. (i’m biased: this guy)
stylists: you may think you can do it all, but TRUST me, it’s very helpful to have a stylist’s eyes on set.
locations: whether it’s party locations, good backyards & bright bedrooms, studios with great light, colorful walls you have driven by…write down all the addresses & contact info.
caterers & people who love to cook: print out take-out menus for shoot days, have lists of caterers for events, and people who would love to cook up something delicious for your blog!
party stores: these always save the day around here. doesn’t even have to be traditional party stores. write down places you have gotten great party supplies…target, west elm etc.
makeup/hair artist: because they always do a better job than i do!
prop stylists & prop houses: it’s all in the details. prop stylists make a world of difference i promise.
furniture rentals: of course our friends at yeah rentals are top on our list.
florists: not only florists, but think flower shops & grocery stores that have a nice selection of blooms. i can’t tell you how many times we have rushed to our local florist on a shoot day!
event designers & crafty folks: we are lucky to have the bash, please girls a phone call away! beyond that, who do you know that’s crafty? who would be into sitting in your living room making party favors all night with you? i know natalie is my go-to gal for crafty!
illustrators: again, make sub categories. i know a lot of illustrators and each of them have a very specific style. if you have categories like “whimsical” or “structured” or “hand lettering” this will help you quickly chose the right person for the project.
designers: graphic designers are always needed! whether it’s updates to your website or making your blog stand out. who’s on your list for designers? i am doing more art directing now, so it’s good to build my graphic designer list if you know someone!
musicians: so you have a blog video and you don’t know how to choose a song for it. what’s allowed? what’s not a million dollars? i’m sure you have friends or mutual friends that know how to play an instrument or can make you something custom in garage band! we had this song created just for this video!
production assistants for bigger shoots: we always underestimate the amount of help we need on a shoot! i’m sure you have a couple people you know that are looking for extra work here and there. write em all down!
bloggers to collaborate with: if you could work with another blogger on a project, who would it be? i’ve been dreaming up some projects with victoria from sfgirlbybay lately. and remember this with emily?
companies you wish to team up with: the ever-growing list. if you like a company…they fit your vibe…put them on the list. pitch them a project or idea (remember this post on pitching your dream project?)
press: who can you reach out to when you are looking to promote something? do you have a contact at a magazine or a popular blog? keep those email addresses in a safe place that will jog your memory.
we just use a simple format when we update our categories:
blog or site url:
address: (if applicable)
comments: lives in LA, great at interiors, easy to work with…
and this is a growing list, so don’t be overwhelmed that you don’t have all the blanks to fill in at once! i’ve been adding to this list for years. it’s just helpful to know what you need to look for in the future. what about you? do you keep a blog rolodex? -bri
