BENEFIT COSMETICS / DREAM JOBS 01

you know when you’re a kid you sit around and wonder what you will be when you grow up? i still have wandering thoughts about what the next 20 years of my career will be like. maybe you dreamed of being a baker or a famous actress or a flight attendant. i thought it would be a fun idea to team up with benefit cosmetics and make my “dream jobs” come to life. we pitched them the idea a few months ago, they were into it and the project unfolded from there. it’s been so amazing to watch a concept start with just a simple list of ideas, to a mood board, and then to this final product.

together with benefit, angela + ithyle and modshift, i took four mini flights of fancy. we created complete makeup looks to complement the hair and wardrobe for each dream job. first up? the jazz singer!

for the next 2 weeks we’ll be showing you each of the professions, and how to get the look for each. we made tutorials and a video as well, which we’ll be posting with the final post (along with a huge makeup giveaway!). here is the first installment of our “all in a daydream’s work” project…

i don’t know why glamour isn’t how it used to be. every woman should have a silk robe and wear red lipstick. i don’t hate those 1940′s style curls either.

my whole family actually sings. and not just around the piano on christmas…but my grandparents used to be in a traveling band back in the day! i would say i have the ability to sing, but i ‘ve never actually enjoyed singing in front of people. i get way too nervous. the shower is a different story. one time i caught my boyfriend recording me singing in the shower (ha, i really only sing otis redding “sitting on the dock of the bay” and usually with the wrong words.) but there is a small part of me that dreams of being a jazz singer…the sparkly dress, the pin curls, the band playing behind you while you sip your cocktail on the instrumental break. it all seems pretty glamorous, right? maybe it’s a good retirement plan.

i rarely ever wear eyeshadow, so this smoky eye really helped me transform into the part. and can we talk about this dress?!

this was definitely the most fun i’ve had on a shoot. although it was  a little awkward getting on stage in front of everyone (angela kept making me sing so that it would look more natural.) it was just so great to see the concept come to life after weeks of planning it.

shop the benefit look: waterproof eyeliner, benetint lip stainmascara, benetint cheek stain, soft-focus highlighter, powder eyeshadow (shade: quick look busy), cream shadow (shade: no pressure)

stay tuned for the next look on thursday! and think about it, what would your dream job be if you could pick anything? -bri

I’ve wanted to be a singer, actress, flight attendant, teacher, artist, dog walker, world traveler, florist and gardener. Well the list goes on, but I thought I’d stop there.

  • 20. erin  |  February 26th, 2013 at 8:24 am

This is great! I’d love to see a post from Angela on how they lit this too for us photography fans :)

  • 21. Rachael B  |  February 26th, 2013 at 8:31 am

There is just something about the 40s that’s both dreamy and dangerous that I love. I’ve been dying to find a red lipstick I can pull off, but as a redhead this is a feat I have yet to conquer. Love the photos. Breathtakingly beautiful and so spot on. And that dress… gah. So gorgeous!

  • 22. stephanie @BabaSouk  |  February 26th, 2013 at 8:32 am

Love the dream job concept!! + this red lipstick is wow!

  • 23. Sarolta  |  February 26th, 2013 at 8:33 am

Oh, I love this idea! I wish I was an art buyer for a gallery with unlimited budget. I’d shop anything great I’d see. Oh, what fun that would be!

  • 24. Monica  |  February 26th, 2013 at 8:37 am

You look like a legitimate jazz singer, with the complete make up (lovely red lip, too) and the perfect blonde, jazzy curls. Great look! Can’t wait for the other looks in this series :)

  • 25. Sharon Garofalow  |  February 26th, 2013 at 8:42 am

This is just absolutely amazing! I agree with Erin! I want to know about the lighting too! (Even though I’m not the biggest genius when it comes to photography!) You should probably really be a jazz singer one day :) You look gorgeous and just by looking at these pictures, I can tell that you were just having the greatest time!

  • 29. Renée Yoxon  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:10 am

Wow, this is great. I am an actual jazz singer (it totally is my dream job) so it’s nice to see other people giving the career the same reverence that I do. Beautiful look.

  • 30. Renée Yoxon  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:12 am

PS: I really wish I had a full time dressing room like the one in this shoot.

  • 31. Teresa  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:17 am

It’s so good to see your hair pulled back from your face in this photo shoot, very nice!

  • 32. Jana  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:20 am

    Lovely style, lovely photographs!
Might want to give this make-up look a try.
However, the past has taught me i’m not exactly a pro when it comes to applying black eyeliner.
Any pointers as to how get it so beautifully straight and non-smudgy?

  • 33. alicia  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:25 am

This is the best. Personal projects are awesome and you are such a great example for that. I makes me excited and inspired to think of what I may want to tackle in the future :)
To quote Jessica Hische “The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life”

Can’t wait to see your other dreams :)

  • 34. Miss Drawingdream  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:39 am

    stunning!

  • 36. Hannah  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:52 am

I love how you’ve kept your nose ring on throughout the shoot! Adds character xx

  • 37. brianna [observant nomad[  |  February 26th, 2013 at 9:56 am

Haha as I read this I’m wearing my red lipstick and I even have a silk robe in the closet that needs to be worn more. Sigh – where did glamour go?

I think glamour is also part self-celebrating and treating. A bubble bath is more glamourous than a shower no? Women need to get back to treating ourselves like the jazz stars we are ;) beautiful styling and shots!

  • 38. Alexandra Pettinato  |  February 26th, 2013 at 10:31 am

It’s funny – one of my dream jobs is to design for Benefit!

  • 39. Hanna [excelsior lady]  |  February 26th, 2013 at 10:32 am

AHHH so many reason to love this!! What you said about having the ability to sing but not enjoying singing in front of people is so spot on. I’ve always wanted to just surprise everyone by singing the blues at an open mic night, but it will probably never happen due to my nerves!

Plus, La Cita is one of my favorite bars in LA. Punky Reggae night is so much fun…crazy dancing!

These photos are to die for. xx

  • 40. Amy Powell  |  February 26th, 2013 at 10:33 am

This is gorgeous… what a great collaboration. You really pulled off the look and captured that era.
on a sidenote: I was checking out the links you included. looks the link for sarah + sunshine might be an older one (with wordpress attached to the domain), cause they have a prettier, updated one :) … in case anyone would like to see. http://sarahandsunshine.com/

How fun. Love this Bri! Can’t wait for the next one :)

  • 48. Michelle  |  February 26th, 2013 at 11:37 am

This is totally amazing. Without trying to sound like a weird groupie (and probably failing) your ‘chutzpah’ of going out and collaborating is inspiring. ps. you totally look like Paloma Faith and I am totally imagining you sounding like her.

  • 49. Shawnee  |  February 26th, 2013 at 11:51 am

Bri, this is amazing! I absolutely love the whole idea + the result! I have always wanted to have a glamorous job like this — fancy sparkly dresses, heels, curls, red lipstick, drink in my hand, cigarette dangling from my fingertips. sort of Breakfast At Tiffany’s meets Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. :) You look gorgeous!! can’t wait to see the rest..

    {flight attendant back in the day is another dream job. I loved the show PanAm!}

  • 50. Latrina  |  February 26th, 2013 at 12:06 pm

Wow, gorgeous photos. How fun this must have been to shoot! I am, in no way, a singer… but I could imagine how cool it would be to be a jazz singer. Jazz singers, especially women, give me chills! Very powerful music.. and performances!

Such a great shoot, Bri. I’m excited to see the others!

And can’t forget to mention — great beauty products! Thanks for sharing.

  • 51. Bettina  |  February 26th, 2013 at 12:24 pm

These images are stunning, and you look incredibly beautiful, Bri. What a great idea! I love that you give us an inside look into the projects that you pitch to brands, and how it comes together. Very inspiring for a blogger like myself who wants to create work of this caliber (in my own style) someday. Well done! Can’t wait to see the rest of the project unfold.

  • 56. Ali Mackin  |  February 26th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Great post Bri, you look great. You really know how to surround yourself with talented people. A professional editorial has nothing on this. You guys have out done your selves.
