so you may have seen the crazy buzz today about the new app VINE. you can record short 6 second videos very easily (no editing required – you just hold down the screen to record a new clip and it ties them all together in the end) and then you share them to your feed just like instagram.

this really got me thinking tonight…we all knew that we were headed in more of a video direction with blogs (heck, that’s why we started this video class) and then boom, this app comes out and catches on like wildfire within a matter of hours? now the people that we have been following for months, sometimes years, we can watch on video. we can hear their voice! a whole new step into someone’s brand…into their lives. can we even handle another social media platform like this? we already consume so much between twitter, facebook and instagram. it’s been incredibly fascinating to witness these sharing platforms all surface and shift around in importance. we used to be tweeting just thoughts. now most of us just tweet our instagrams and posts. before that we were creating personal albums on facebook. and now we are scrolling and hearing people talk? at first glance, i admit, it felt almost creepy. but most definitely intriguing, right? i’d love to hear your thoughts.

my brain started spinning. how are brands going to use this? how is my brand going to use this? it definitely sparked some creativity for me. and maybe it will all fizzle, who knows. but what if it takes over people’s interest and scrolling through instagram just isn’t enough for people anymore. humans are funny, we really are always needing more.

but let’s give it a shot…eh? follow my videos at @designlovefest – here’s a peek at a valentine’s shoot we did today. and follow @iheartblogshop for our traveling class adventures.

a tip: there IS sound…if you’re phone is on vibrate you can’t hear the videos. switch it to ringer.

I think it’s really intimidating. I love social media and I think it’s a great way to share ideas, inspirations and start conversations about big ideas. But it’s also a little scary to think that in order to stay socially relevant you have to be up on the lastest technology while also creating innovative and quality content. I’m excited to try it and see how it evolves and changes the way we blog and communicate!

  • 2. Jenna @ grapefruit and gold  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:05 am

It’s so funny that you should mention how next level this app is going to be because all I could think about today was what a crazy impact this is about to have for social media marketing. I can’t wait. So. Genius.

  • 3. Lynne  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:08 am

Honestly, in a matter of hours I am already tired of Vine. It’s too much.

  • 4. Vredenburgje.wordpress.com  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:08 am

It IS something completely different in social media land! So maybe it will catch on. For now it’s just fun to be able to see people you’ve been following for a long time, moving AND speaking haha.

  • 5. Amanda  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:08 am

Honestly, I’ll probably check it out, and maybe even like it, but my first reaction was, “Ugh, something else??” I’m all for changing, moving on, evolving, etc. but at what point does it just get to be too much? I guess that’s why we all just have to create our own boundaries.

  • 6. bri  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:08 am

totally agree with you both. scary to put yourself out there. and also thrilling to watch the evolution of social media. i think people are going to do some really cool things.

  • 7. bri  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:11 am

ha, lynne! i know what you mean, but there is always going to be boring content on these platforms…but the best part is that you can choose who to follow! i think it’s going to take some time for people to adjust and find the best way to use it.

  • 8. Meg  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:30 am

    Oooh! I love this!!

  • 9. aimeeclaire  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:31 am

I think it’s exciting and just a little bit clever too. It’s innovative and it’s going to force me to think outside the box and be creative. As a photographer, I can’t wait to see where this will go!

  • 10. Ashley Marie  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:34 am

It does seem incredibly overwhelming. Im actually drafting up a post about this myself. When my IG feed blew up about it, for about 10 minutes I swore I wasn’t going to cave in. But I did. We will se how well it goes, where it goes. I plan on doing most of my sewing tutorials and DIY projects {snippets, of course} using this platform. Hopefully that will catch on. We will see.

  • 11. Sara  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:48 am

Bri, I think it’s cool but the data it’s going to eat up! I live in Canada and phone bills are way more expensive here. When I went on Instagram I noticed I used a lot more data. I can’t even imagine how much data will be used to view and download video. I know I won’t be able to use Vine without going over :(. This is why I don’t know if it will catch on, at least not in places that aren’t the States/

I hate to be a debby downer though!

  • 12. Anh @ Feminine 23  |  January 28th, 2013 at 1:04 am

I just read about this app from another blogger and here you go too. It actually sounds really cool to try out. And I’m pretty sure it’s gonna boost a lot of people’s creativity. 6 seconds ain’t too much but they definitely talk!

  • 13. Clarissa  |  January 28th, 2013 at 1:13 am

I’m reading about this now. I like the concept but it seems like there are a few gliches they need to work out; and porn is already swamping the app. Sheesh.

  • 14. Drew @ Catfish & Caviar  |  January 28th, 2013 at 6:21 am

    This is so exciting!

  • 15. Kate of Domestic Slice  |  January 28th, 2013 at 6:42 am

I think it’s a really interesting concept, but like you, I wonder… can we really handle another social media technology? For me, I just wonder about how to find the time to really connect with people and stay engaged with all of the different channels.

  • 16. Abigail Bobo  |  January 28th, 2013 at 8:24 am

This new app is CRAZY. I’ll have to go check it out :D

  • 17. Anna @ IHOD  |  January 28th, 2013 at 8:33 am

I have to admit, I kind of like that there is still a little mystery left in people’s life. Sometimes we stop making the real life effort with relationships when we get it all through our news feed.

However, I can only imagine how rad your vids will be Bri! ;)

  • 18. Heidi @ The Rustic Modernist  |  January 28th, 2013 at 8:43 am

I have to say that I’m so not into this. I understand that videos may be the wave of the future for blogs but all of this social media is just killing me. I don’t need or want to feel like I have to keep tweeting my every breath, vine-ing all of my days or updating one more thing. Over it. It feels like too much.

  • 19. Kris  |  January 28th, 2013 at 8:47 am

I saw this burning up my news feed on instagram last night and was soo thrown off!? I thought everyone had a virus! Now I know it’s ligit I will check it out! Thanks so much Bri!

  • 20. Ryan  |  January 28th, 2013 at 9:31 am

Unfortunately, it might all go down in a ball of flames because of all the porn on it.

  • 21. chelsea  |  January 28th, 2013 at 9:49 am

thought this was interesting bri >> http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2013/01/twitter-new-app-vine-porn

  • 22. Erin  |  January 28th, 2013 at 10:05 am

Desperate for it to be on android, but also nervous. Shades of “Singin’ in the Rain”– just like the rise of “talkies,” will Vine be the death of non-video oriented blogs? What about people who don’t sound as cute as the content they create?
At the same time, the possibilities are fascinating– film-making for everyone!

  • 23. Molly  |  January 28th, 2013 at 11:07 am

I love video…this one is really inspiring me lately – a tour of Paris using typography only:

Such an inventive use of video, non?

PS: Love your blog! It is everything!

  • 24. Patti Murphy  |  January 28th, 2013 at 12:40 pm

so in love with this app! can’t wait to see your 6 seconds videos ; )

  • 25. Ashley  |  January 28th, 2013 at 1:05 pm

I loved it but sadly because of the porn problem I find it unlikely that it will last. Apple will probably pull the plug. bummer. Hopefully they find a solution to the porn problem and this app can stay.

  • 26. Julie  |  January 28th, 2013 at 3:28 pm

Liking it it so far. There are a few things they can improve upon. I’d like to know how you linked to your V-day video in this post?

  • 27. Sara  |  January 28th, 2013 at 3:30 pm

I’ve had this thought before, too, but I guess it’s just part of globalization and closing distances with technology. On one hand, it is so nice to feel connected with people on the other side of the country (or world). It allows us to share and experience ideas and creativity from varying cultures/people even if we can’t travel to certain places. It also is great to hear and see my boyfriend from 2,000 miles away – thank you FaceTime (a great conversation would be how social media technology changes relationships)! However, the downside is that we may rely too heavily on such platforms and lose the specialness of seeing and communicating with people. For me, it helps, but I don’t use every platform available (I can’t keep up with them all!). As for Vine itself, I think it is a fun, quirky app that will add a new spark to texting and creativity to blogging – mainly for showing progressions (just my opinion!).

  • 28. Natalie | A Dose of the Delightful  |  January 28th, 2013 at 4:10 pm

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from 2012 is that the more time I spend connecting to the outside (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Cinemagram/Internet in general), the less time I spend connecting to the inside. The less I connect to the inside, the less inspired I am, the more half-baked ideas I have that are never fully fleshed out/finished, and the less I feel I’m being my authentic self. I’m only just now setting out to find a balance that works best for me – that allows me to be inspired by these media without getting distracted, overwhelmed, and discouraged by them. So this is something I won’t be trying out for a very, very long time, if at all. But I think that has more to do with my personal needs/boundaries; I’m sure there are people who are able to use Vine and all of the other platforms out there without them getting out of balance…I think?

  • 29. Kate  |  January 28th, 2013 at 7:01 pm

I’m loving it. Social media challenges us to be creative and to continue learning new things every day.

We obv. have to set our own boundaries of turning the technology off and having real relationships, but it’s up to ourselves to be totally responsible… and it’s up to techie brilliant people to create new options for communication!

    Personally, I heart vine.

  • 30. Latrina  |  January 29th, 2013 at 11:37 am

I’ve been hearing so much about Vine these past two days! Finally downloaded it last night and spent some time messing around with it — so easy to use! I am eager to see how others incorporates this into their blogs.

  • 31. Lia Fagan  |  January 29th, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Can anyone tell me how to link to your VINE videos from a blog post like Bri did above with her “here’s a peak” link?

  • 32. Bettina  |  January 29th, 2013 at 3:43 pm

I am so unsure about Vine so far, I feel like I’m burnt out on every social media channel and need to start looking more inward, but I couldn’t help myself and signed up. I posted a few videos, but I feel like the ones I have make me a little car sick. I’ve got to get better at them :) But I also need to not get sucked in. I will try my absolute best, but it’s always so darn fun to see what everyone is up to!
