ADVICE / 44

today’s question: “are client gifts a must?”

KATIE’S ANSWER:
i don’t think so. i have never given them. my budget doesn’t allow for it. i think it’s nice when you can, especially if it’s something with thought (maybe it’s handmade!). i see other freelance friends getting lavish cookie baskets and they’re wonderful gestures but beyond my means.

this year i’m hoping to get my act together and send out a new years card (i’m already too late for the holidays). if that fails then maybe it will turn into an ecard and i’ll make it a gif. i think sending something is a nice gesture. if anything, it reminds your clients that you’re still out there and they had a great time working with you!

BRI’S ANSWER:
i think as designers, we have a lot of branding plans…we think up fun ideas we could send out to people in adorable branded boxes…we really want to have it all together. but time slips away from almost everyone during the holidays, right? it becomes hard to even find the time to buy gifts for those special family members. and people understand that, because they most likely are just as busy.

i think it’s nice to send a little note or gesture right after the project is finished. last year i made these little handmade gifts to send out during thanksgiving. i think whenever you can make it work is perfect. maybe it’s even more special to receive a gift on a random tuesday rather than for the holidays.

something that would be cute to mail if you had some extra time…
1. make a little notepad with their new logo that you made for them! (we made these for blogshop from artwork i uploaded)
2. send them a wantful gift.
3. make them a rubber stamp or stickers with their logo. more on that here.
4. just send a cute card. that’s definitely enough. browse through these archives for card ideas!

These are great ideas! I am always stumped on what to get the coworkers or boss. That personalized notebook is awesome.

These are awesome gift ideas, I especially like the idea of the custom logo stamp. That seems like the kind of thing a client probably wouldn’t think to make for themselves but would love to have!

I’m not a designer, but someone who hires them. I find it odd when someone I’ve hired sends a gift, even if it’s been a long partnership. I’m paying you for a service and don’t need or expect some token.

That being said, the smartest “gift ” I got from a design agency i had hired was a couple of pads of post-it notes with THEIR logo on it. They had essentially branded my desk for the lifetime of the pad and got extra work from me because they were front of mind. It helped that their logo was super cute so I didn’t mind having it on my desk all the time.

Do you have any advice for email accounts?
Do you usually just use your email accounts with your hosting plans or do you use accounts like Yahoo or Gmail?
    What do you recommend?

    Thanks!
