LOCKED UP

i have definitely been a little MIA these days. but rue magazine has had me literally locked to my desk designing. BUT i’m super excited to share the new issue with you all tomorrow! it’s all about making small spaces have character and style. just because you live in a tiny apartment sure doesn’t mean you can’t get really creative with the space, right?

my dear friend jen gotch shot these photos for the issue. in a dollhouse! how freakin cute are they?! and thanks to casa de perrin, the styling is perfection.

do any of you live in a tiny place? what are some ways you spiced it up? i’d love to hear!
and make sure you check out rue tomorrow for lots of valentine gift ideas & fun styling tips, ok?

Love Rue Mag and all your delicious posts locked in visual allure. I live in a tiny place. All the colors, art and accessories layer, connect, bounce color, texture and recognition. Big pieces of art, rugs, fabric & strong groupings add warmth, drama and focus. Editing and white space tie the knot.

Super cute! I love all things miniature!
I think the key to living in a tiny place is making it feel comfy and creative…not cluttered or claustrophobic.

oh dear, miniature things. I live in a small space and get really into unconventional space, like the 2 in wide perch of a mirror that I can place bottles on top of, or the shelf that can have a picture frame or two on it in addition to being purely functional. Interesting things in fun spaces without being messy.

Our place is smaller then tiny for our family of three. Our 15 month old, Jude, sleeps in our walk-in closet that is above our basement stairs (we like to think he is another version of Harry Potter in that way:)) I get a lot of organization tips from pinterest to try and utilize our space better. Such as crates as bookshelves, minimalistic furniture, closet organization, etc. But with not much being done about the actual square footage, its a good thing I kinda love the company.

Sounds so perfect for me with my tiny NYC apt. I can’t wait to see the unveil!!

In our small apartment we try to make the most of our vertical space for art and for storage. Floating shelves are the best thing because they leave floor space for another piece or as decorating “white space”.
Can’t wait to the new issue!

I live in a very tiny tenement apartment in NYC and the key to keeping it tolerable is to be uber organized. I even hired a professional home organizer to come over and tell me how to be on point.
I also have a very open closet-type-structure and you can SEE all my clothes all the time and I have a rainbow of bras and all my fun faux fur coats on display.

I spiced my place up with alot of shelving in order to keep things in their place & the overall space organized. Created height and definition through the use of color and hanging curtain rods above the moldings to make the room seem higher/taller.

I’m no stranger to small spaces; having lived in Chicago and Boston as a single girl- I had to forgo owning a dresser and other little luxuries but I would change it for the world.
Some tips that helped, when in Chicago my room was so small, I couldnt have any furniture but a bed so I turned to a french chateau theme and bought a vintage vanity table that I treasure. Of course, we would all big beautfil houses, but for now my few small treasures are just what I need

My husband, two bunnies, and I live in a truly tiny studio in Chicago along with our photography and music stuff. My best advice for someone living in teenie spaces is to make sure your furniture serves multiple uses (storage and seating, for example), to keep clutter to a minimum because it makes an already small space seem smaller and to loft your bed! That’s probably the best space saving thing we’ve done! If you’re interested in seeing our tiny home here’s a link: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chris-amp-azurees-retro-cozy-a-130145

use height! never be satisfied with a corner or wall or surface that only uses one plane.

I’m so happy that you’re focusing on small spaces for this issue. I’m a current apartment dweller in Chicago and have learned lots of tricks for maximizing space. Example: I use an old antique dresser as a bar cart, but the drawers double as storage for dining room supplies, extra utensils and other odds and ends.

Well my heart just went pitter patter to the max. Can’t wait to see it. My small space trick…. hide it under the bed!

my husband and I just moved from a large house to a tiny studio apartment after culling various items (dining tables, chests of drawers, desks) we are embracing the minimalist life – but furniture that has double uses are a life saver and organisation is KEY… also turning unusable spaces into storage (our bathroom has a bath and shower so we are in the process of building shelving to sit over the bath) are always something to look into

currently sprucing up my place! im experimenting with color but keeping palettes very simple so as not to overwhelm the space- or myself. http://www.paperplanesandmaryjanes.com/2012/01/office-redesign-part-2.html

I’m about to move into our first (tiny) house and I’m a bit nervous about how it will work and be pretty, so I can’t wait to see this issue!

My first apartment in Chicago was oh-so-tiny! My secret trick was LOTS of mirrors and strategically placed glassware. The reflections make a space seem larger than it is. Also cute baskets helped keep clutter out of view.
Looking forward to this issue. I just moved to Lausanne, Switzerland and am about to decorate my new apartment. It’s a vintage beauty and the layout is unique so I’m on the hunt for some good tips
Thanks for your continually amazing blog!

I just moved in my first own apartment and it is a tiny one. I think the key is to keep the furniture and walls in neutral colors and give the space some live with colorful decoration like pillows, frames, pictures etc. I really love my frame wall.

if you have wooden floors, painting them white can make it look more spacious. and if you want lots of light in a tiny space, hang a mirror on one wall across from another mirror on the other wall so they reflect each other. it will look really pretty and make it look open.

So cute! Can’t wait to see the new issue! I feel like you just put out the last one…hah. Busy busy bees.
I moved into my first ‘big girl’ apartment last year, and sadly, I still feel like I’m putting it together all the time. I just found the perfect small dining table to go in my living room. I can finally eat at a table! yay! I spruce my place up with finds from etsy, and homemade art projects…pops of color in pillows and accessories are everywhere too. Also, living in Savannah, GA, I’m able to find lots of antiques, which add a lot of charm to my small space.

I live in a small one room apartment. The feeling of space and just “aha, love it!” has to be awarded to the person who actually designed the space. I know that’s why I loved it, as soon as the door opened and I walked in, I told the realtor I want to sign the contract. Afterwards, I couldn’t really recall the size or look of the place, just the feeling.
I’m pretty lucky that even though it’s one room, the space is divided into levels that make it all feel spacious. But there are tricks to living right in the space. First of all, don’t block light, so don’t put large and tall furniture next windows. Also try to keep all large and bulky storage and furniture below line of sight. I am not a minimalistic person, so there’s stuff EVERYWHERE, but everything has its place. seemingly ordered piles make it look better.

What a small world the internet is! I was clicking thru Rue the other day and fell IN LOVE with the dollhouse images. I even blogged about how awesome it is. It’s funny that a hair article on thebeautydepartment.com led me to your site and here are dollhouse pics again!
love it.
